“A warm welcome awaits any traveller to this excellent hotel”
Reviewed June 5, 2009

We were welcomed to the hotel on arrival personaly by Frau Berger-Brandl and her staff who were all very friendly and helpful throughout our 6 day stay.
The hotel is conveniently placed in the centre of the village by the church and cable car. There is a modern "wellness centre" within the hotel with a sauna, solarium, indoor swimming pool and massage / beauty treatment salon.
Our room was a good size and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the snow capped mountains.
The food was Excellent in both quality and quantity from breakfast to evening dinner, with the very best of service from the staff in the dinning room, bar and reception where we got some very useful information on routes for local walks and bus service time table etc.
We will visit again and would recommend anyone to share the same experience we had.
All the very best for the future. Mr & Mrs D Brierley Yorkshire, England.

We had a great trip in late March 2009. The hotel is ideally situated in the main pedestrianised area which has lots of bars and restaurants and much character, and yet only a few minutes walk to a choice of 3 different sli lifts.

This charming family-run hotel has all the amenities to keep a large group happy : good bedrooms, public areas and excellent food (including for vegetarians), and the staff are very attentive. We will certainly return.

The reception area not great, small and rather uninviting .very disappointing rooms, shabby & small...i was sharing a family room with 2 friends and my bed was actually in the alley way! There were only 2 sets of towels in our bethroom for 3 of us and on my second request for a third set i actually had to take the gentleman on reception up to our room to show him the problem as his understanding of English was so limited. He kindly produced a set of tiny hand towels...not great for using after showering but better then nothing.! Our room looked out onto the main street which was very pretty with a nicely lit tree , but the night time noise was awful...we were above the front door and had all the disco/table dancing club folk spilling out onto the street in the wee small hours. Not a lot of sleep was had.The bathroom was very pokey and once standing in the bath it was nearly impossible to get the shower door closed ...and i'm normal size! heaven help any larger person.
We found mrs. Berger and her manager lady (alice i think is her name) very false...all smiles but nothing else. We felt we were being watched all the time and they seemed so uninterested in anyones welfare. The food was very salty so we were wanting water, but we were not allowed any until we had ordered wine! to be fair, our waitress(Birgit) was good ..and so were the breakfasts. We did enjoy the pool on a daily basis after skiing but the changing area was rather public. The location of the hotel is good...close to the lifts and gondolas but being on the main street meant of lot of night noise. For a 4star hotel this was very disappointing .in every way We also were disappointed in Crystal..we had a few problems while there and had no help from the rep at all. I loved Saalbach but not the Berger's Sport hotel, it was more like a 2 possibly 3 star.

I have been travelling to Austria several years and I was totally shocked at the offensively low standards of the rooms we were were allocated in this hotel. I went with a tour company, but if I had booked independently, I would have walked out immediately.

We were eventually (after 4 days) moved to Junior suites. These were better, but not better than the standard I would expect from standard four star room. The main issues are:

- The rooms were excessively small.

- The rooms were not provided with proper windows. Only half size windows were provided and these were above eye level.

- Insufficient storage. There was no chest of draws and insufficient space to unpack clothing. Plus there is not enough floor space to even lay your suitcases on the floor.

- Insufficient space to hang or dry wet ski clothing.

- Insufficient floor space meant that only one person in each room could only get dressed at a time!

- Rooms were extremely tatty and dated.

The rooms were deeply unpleasant and totally unacceptable for both the price we paid and the hotel's supposed four star rating.

Other Issues with the hotel include:-
- The hotel's ski locker doubles as the hotel's nightclub/strip club's cloakroom. (not joking) I don't consider this to be particularly safe.

- The hotel's apres ski bar has a parties which go on very late – i.e. 4am. The rooms are not sound proofed so bring some ear plugs if you actualy want to ski the next day.

I can only assume that people who gave this hotel good reviews have not stayed in a normal Austrian Four Star, which are typically fantastic. I adore Austria and consider it a great shame that this appalling hotel is tarnishing its good name.

size of the rooms

Bergers Sporthotel offers 5 categories of rooms:

A: room second main building

B.: small double bed room
( cheaper price, at a reduction)

C.: standard rooms ( double, triple, quad)

superior rooms:
D.: Junior suites
E.: appartement rooms

----------------------------------

Maybe sometimes clients have not been informed well
by their travel agency , what type of room the booking
consists or do not read the brochure.

----------------------------------------

In this case we upgraded the guests instead of the small double bed rooms
( what they booked and paid in) whithout supplement to Junior suites
as soon as it was available to satisfy them .

We are a traditional Austrian family run hotel , and the members of our family make every endeavour
giving each our personal attention presenting Austrian Hospitality at it best.

Having read some of the reviews I was a bit apprehensive about the Berger but actually it is a delightful hotel. Yes, the decor is a little strange but the welcome of the management and staff was wonderful - nothing seemed to be too much trouble and what little problems we had with the rooms etc. were quickly sorted. The standard double rooms were very small and unless you are a solo traveller it is definitely worth paying for a larger room. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and and although overlooking the main street we weren't disturbed by noise. Two of our party were given a room in the annexe and their room was also good - reasonably spacious and quite modern. The food was excellent - large buffet breakfasts and everyone in our party was very happy with the evening choices. Wine was relatively expensive but I guess that's Austria. Saalbach has plenty to keep intermediates happy for a week and I'd be happy to return to Saalbach and would definitely stay at the Berger Sportshotel again.

This is not a 4-star hotel. it is 2-star pushing 3 .
Have your 'excellant' reviewers ever stayed in a proper 4-star ??
1) Half the Entrance is given over to a night club with Table-Dancing a speciality,
one of the girls is outside the front door giving out free entrance tickets, explain that to
your children.

2) Rooms are tiny, bathroom doors can only be opened half-way ,the sink is in the way !

3)We could only get tap water at dinner if we bought over priced wine!! 1 ltr of water with each bottle of wine

18 of us enjoyed staying at the Berger for a skiing trip in February. It's well placed for the Schattberg gondola (3 minutes walk with skis) and the Bernkogel lift (5/10 minutes walk with skis) and for a good selection of local bars and restaurants.
The hotel is somewhat quirky in its decor and its range of facilities (including nightclub with lap dancing bar!) but it serves good food and the rooms are clean.
We did have some problems with room allocation but this was more the tour operator's fault (Crystal) rather than the hotels'. Once sorted everyone was fairly happy with the rooms they had, although the ones with a view over the main street were a bit noisy at night.
Saalbach is not as raucous as some people seem to make out but it has its fair share of late night revellers for you to join in with or moan about when they keep you awake (we were all young once!!)
The skiing area is extensive enough to keep good intermediates happy for a week but not much for experts unless you go off piste.
All in all I'd be happy to return to the Berger in the future.
