“Alpenhotel own restaurant La Trattoria”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

In the hotel a very good italian/mexicaqn eatery is located. The name is "La Tratorria". good solid italian food. The waiter actually spoke Italian. The prices were very reasonable and the quality of food was excellent. For exmple with my wife we came rather late in the evening and wanted somethin quick and light to snack on. the waiter suggested "prosciutto crudo with melon). To this we added a rather large focaccia, half a liter of good house red (cabernet-merlot-shiraz blend) and expresso and the cost was EUR 21... we returned few times for other meals and always it was excellent. the problem was the wardrobe (according to the waiter it was the wish and order of "padrone")...I can reccomend this for a quiet dinner or lunch for two.

Perfectly situated in the middle of town. Large family run traditional hotel.
Big rooms (4 star - not 5) clean and comfortable. Bathrooms OK. Great views from lovely balconies.
Lovely dining room with superb food. Large Austrian wine cellar at reasonable prices.
Lively bar and additional smoking lounge!
The spa is great with a fantastic sauna and steam room, a large jacuzzi and swimming pool.
Service is exemplary.
The skiing is really good for intermediates and above. Not so great for beginners. The slopes are prepared to perfection every night
Will definitely go again.

Room Tip: Get a large room with a balcony on a high floor for the view. Some of the rooms have been more recen...

My wife and I are just back from an extremely enjoyable week of skiing in Saalbach. All in all, an excellent trip to a resort that is compact but not lacking in facilities. The hotel is ideally located, almost ski-in ski-out to the school meeting area and a very short walk to the various lift systems. As with most winter guests, we were on half board and it was of very good quality. An excellent breakfast buffet ranging from muesli, fruit etc to omelettes with local cheese and ham, as well as fresh juices. An afternoon 'skier's snack' was offered and this was very welcome - generally something like goulash soup that gave a post-ski boost but didn't ruin the appetite. Evening meal was generally a buffet but with a wide choice and, unlike some restaurants in Germanic countries, was well stocked with salad and vegetables.
Rooms were clean and spacious. Spa facilities were also good and the main bar was very well designed. Herr Thomas and his wife hosted a welcome drink where they were very generous and where they gave an introduction to their staff, all very professional and courteous.

What could change ? Better ventilation at the hot breakfast area, something I gather is planned for the off-season. Other than half-board, one could also eat at the pizzeria, TexMex or a vegan restaurant. We ate at the pizzeria - perfectly fine. As we arrived just before 10pm on our first night, dinner was in the Tex Mex. I wouldn't say it's Joel Robuchon but it's not bad. However, it's a massive space that just doesn't seem to be used that well. Some kind of sports bar or such would work better. As a gesture to my wife, we sought out the vegan restaurant but it's pretty obvious that the concept isn't popular in Austria as there was no-one there - a wok bar would be better.

All in all, a really good place !

Did not stay at the hotel but visited the HORRIFIC mexican diner. My list of complaints include:

- Mandatory cloakroom with 1 euro fee (who in their right mind actually charges their guests a fee to enter their restaurant??). The waiter's only comment to our complaints on this subject was that we were not the first people to complain. (well then do something about it already....).

- Food was cold AND bad. We ordered tortillas with so-called argentinean fillet - the meat was however extremely tough (impossible to chew)

- When we made our reservation we were told on the phone that we would be seated at their piano - we clearly said on the phone that we did NOT want to sit at their piano - the man on the phone said "no problem, we will find a solution" - nonetheless upon arrival we were seated at their piano table - which is NOT a table but actually a piano resulting in us standing up for the entire meal.......

- The other guests had clearly not showered but were dining in their skiing underwear and clothes - one man even put his foot on his table !

All in all an awful place.

The restaurant has a mandatory 1-euro coat check. Two friends, who arrived late and didn't want to use the coat check, were denied access to the restaurant.

We ordered a platter of different meats and fried food. Half the items were clearly of the frozen, prefabricated variety.

When this was pointed out to the waiter, along with the point that 19 euros for frozen food was a bit stiff, his reply was uncaringly that I was the first customer to complain about that in the five years he'd been working there. I had to reiterate to him several times that it wasn't his job to explain, just to relay the complaint to the kitchen and management. I doubt he did that, despite his promise to do so after I repeatedly insisted.

This is clearly a place that survives on the fact that the tourist population changes every week or so, and as such don't have to care about repeat customers. If this restaurant had been in a town with permanent residents, it would not survive!

Service was average overall, but the complaint handling was abysmal. Food was below average (other members of the party had fajitas that were at least edible) to simply horrendous (small portion of frozen food for 19 euros).

Do not go!

Very well run, with the owner Herr Thomas always quietly in the background checking the operation. Staff were universally friendly, with special mention to Daniel who looked after our group of 20 fantastically well in the restaurant. Main restaurant food was excellent, rooms were large and clean, easy proximity to three different ski lifts. Plunge pool, sauna, hot tub all well looked after. One very minor complaint - wifi access is erratic.

We spent five days in Alpenhotel Saalbach on our Christmas holidays.
The junior suite we stayed at was large, clean, nicely furnished with a fireplace and a balcony overlooking the village and the Alps. When you opened your eyes in the morning ,the first thing you saw was the white mountains and the pistes. It was beautiful!
Breakfast and dinner was served in a traditional restaurant. Food was delicious and the soup was always excellent. There was also α kids menu. Our waiter and waitress,Daniel and Monica were polite, really warm ,smiling and always eager to help.
In the afternoon you could have a snack at the piano bar .
The hosts Mr and Mrs Thomas welcomed us every single night at the restaurant and on Christmas gala dinner they created a realy warm atmosphere for everyone!
Our kids also loved the family dog Emmelie, a beautiful black Labrador.
There was also a spa area in the hotel. The drawback was that the swimming pool was very small even for the children .
Another thing I would like to mention was a complimentary sleigh ride we had on Christmas day! The hotel had arranged for all the customers to be transfered to the next village where we all had a wonderful sleigh ride in a two horse open sleigh , through the white mountains in the night. It was magic!!!
I would absolutely recommend Alpenhotel for an unforgettable family holiday!
