“Eat and have fun with sledges!”
Reviewed February 20, 2014

The lunch at Spielberghaus was a spur of the moment desicion. I felt like walking, the weather was nice, crisp bvut not too cold. I went walking - it's 2,5km from Saalbach village, nice up-hill walk the forest. Just perfect for gaining the appetite.
The place is nice, stays alone in the middle of the forest and mountains. Made of wood, inside it is simple but it feels very warm and welcoming.
I had a consomme with excellent cheese dumpling and after that apfelstrudel with vanilla souce. The menu is a selection of mostly tipical austrian dishes.

The prices are a bit high, but considering now in the winter they have to bring everything with the snow cat up here... Though in my opinion the drink's pricelist is really a bit exagerated.

They are well organized, in the summer they offer good service for bikers and now in the winter for a reasonable 8 euro they will bring you up with the snow cat and downhill you sledge on your own! The path is well cared for and it's illuminated in the evening.

“Well worth it”
Reviewed February 3, 2014

Very cosy and friendly place. Do it for the ride up there in the heavy-duty machine, and the ride down which we did via toboggans but can easily be done via skiing/snowboarding too. Staff really nice, food was really good (the pork knuckle in particular), and well worth a visit.

“Do it for the ride up and down - and a good time!”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

We rode on the back of a piste basher on the way up there. Quite fun, but pick your spot wisely. ;-)
Also, bringing goggles may not be a bad idea, you may need them for the return trip later as well.

You can ski down to the hut as well, although I have never tried that.

I remember the food as being just what the doctor ordered.
The place itself is very cosy and have a homie feeling too it, most of the time it’s pretty full of people having a good time.

The ride down is always interesting, probably more so if you got a few too many under the vest at the restaurant.
I have always gone in “normal clothing”, but maybe wearing your skiing outfit is not altogether a bad idea, depending on the weather.
If you get all the way down without rolling over with the plastic toboggan, you didn’t go fast enough. 
Note: When you get closer to the bottom, people who don’t pay attention run the risk of ending up in the (small) river, especially when there is a lot of snow.

Why should you visit?
Mainly for the piste basher ride up and the toboggan ride down.
The food is good, better than most food you get during the day on the mountain …or in the restaurants in the town, to be honest, but nothing really spectacular.
It’s a good time on the mountain after a day of skiing.

“Heidelbeer Omelett”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

This is the place where you have to eat heidelbeer omelett - it is so good. The staff is quick and nice. Beautiful environment - nice view over the valley and the hills around.

“Great fun night out”
Reviewed March 30, 2013 via mobile

Ride behind or on a piste basher to get there and return on a well made, plastic toboggan in the dark down a barely lit wide path. Utter madness and must not be missed! Food is ok, not great, but more than adequate for the money. Go with a rep or your ski instructors as they know how to party!
