The alps here are outstanding. There are lifts to help you get to altitude quickly if you desire, or you can readily ascend from the valley. The huts in the alps are there for overnight accommodations, or a beer/snack.

as I already read on Tripadvisor, good maps are welcome. Especially the walks from the two local cable companies (Ahorn and Penken) are not so well indicated; we did other very nice walks farther away (in the Tuxertal and in the Zillergrund) and they were better marked
So you 'd better buy a good map from the tourist office (although they say you don't need it!)

There a lots of walks around the Mayrhofen area, both at valley level and up in the mountains - something for everyone! A possible improvement would be to add distances to the signage, at the moment they are expressed in time to walk them. Some of the walks need the signs checking - we walked down from the Ahorn lift, which was enjoyable until the signs completely disappeared! We estimated we walked a detour of a couple of miles because of this. But the majority are clearly labelled and well-maintained. The biking trails also looked lots of fun, though didn't try them personally.

There are a huge number of trails for walking, running, hiking and biking around Mayrhofen - both at town level and in the mountains - with something to suit all abilities and interests. All those which we encountered were well signposted and kept in very good condition. Stunning scenery almost in every direction.

This was my second hiking holiday to Austria and I am hooked on the place. I do a lot of hiking in the UK but have to say I am so impressed with the way marking and directional signs on the paths. GPS and map hardly come out of my rucksack.
