“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

Our second visit to the Kaprunerhof was even better than our first! Our room had recently been refurbished to a very high standard and had lovely views of the Kitzsteinhorn; the food was even better than we remembered; and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful including dealing with my wife's special dietary requirements. Stefan's advice on walking options, particularly after the first snowfall of the year was much appreciated and we enjoyed a guided walk to the hydro scheme reservoirs. We greatly enjoyed the spa facilities!

We stayed at the hotel as a base for a walking holiday. There were magnificent views of the Kitzteinhorn from our room which was clean and a decent size (deluxe romantic). The half-board option is very good value and the chef produced a consistently high standard every night. Service is very efficient. What was particularly useful was that the hotel participates in the Summer Card scheme which proved invaluable when using cable cars, buses, etc. We worked out that the savings on the card paid our bar bill at the end of the week!

the Kaprunerhof got off to a very good start by offering us two rooms as singles for the price of a double as they could not split the Austrian double beds. This meant we were in the basement in the Komfort style rooms - but it was great to be offered the option. These were not as up to date as the others on higher floors appeared to be - but they suited us very well.

the service in the hotel was excellent - despite catering for quite a large number of people, often in big groups. Breakfast was great and their gala dinner - offered on the Sunday - was really brilliant food.

we also got very good advice from Stefan on where to go walking on our last day. he warned us off one route which we thought we might do - but recommended another excellent one which was one of the highlights of our trip.

like other reviewers, we were put off the spa by the warning that this was a "nacktbereich"

Room Tip: rooms are priced for what you get - am sure the upper floor rooms are better - but ours were perfect...

Only good things to say about this hotel, from start to finish. Warm welcome from Stefan and his family. The hotel has been refurbished to a high standard, is exquisitely clean and, mostly importantly, had the most comfortable of beds. Lots of space in the room with superb views of the Kitzteinhorn from our balcony. The dining room was tastefully decorated and the food second to none with great choices from the buffet bar for breakfasts, salads, etc to a choice of three main courses in the evening, totalling 5 courses in all and the staff were very friendly. We certainly weren't rushed to finish our meal (as quoted in last review) and it was very leisurely. We took our pudding outside to the garden most evenings and it wasn't a problem and we dressed appropriately so that it wasn't too hot in the restaurant, having been 35 degrees most days. We used the hotel bikes most days to cycle to Zell am See to the Lake. Took roughly 25 minutes on a mostly flat cycle track. Great way to get around. The hotel is ideally located down a no-through road so no traffic noise from our room! There is another road opposite but this leads up to the reservoirs and so also is a dead end so very quite at night! Kaprun is a great base, especially with the Zell Summer Card with free use of the lifts, swimming pools round Lake Zell, etc. Very friendly place and will definitely return at some stage.

Room Tip: Hunting Suite de Luxe had extra window which allowed a flow of air through the room.

Having read the excellent reviews we Arrived with great anticipation. Everything was there to fulfill our expectations, but good service and temperature control! Granted it was mid August and temperatures were in the 30s, but we stayed in 5 other hotels on this trip and they either had air-con, or provided us with a fan. Kaprunerhof did not- "No - it is summer!" was what we were told! Likewise the beautiful dining room and food was completely spoiled by lack of air, excessive temperatures and a determination to get us through 5 potentially excellent courses within an hour. We asked to eat outside, again the answer was no (there were tables). Sadly they also allowed smoking in one bar (most people in Austria seem to smoke) and there was usually sport on the TV in the other bar.
The rooms were nice, the food was good, Kaprun is an excellent centre, though the hotel itself is not ideally placed- our room was on the third floor and so seemed to "collect" road noise and funnel it in though two sets of windows.
Would I go there again? Possibly in the cold season but never in summer

We stayed here for a week in July. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable with all mod cons, with a picture postcard view of Kitzteinhorn from the balcony. A spa was available (which we didn't use - too modest for the 'dress-code'), but the main attraction was the food, which was on a par with a number of Michelin starred restaurants we have visited (and presented in a similar, modern European style). High quality, imaginative dishes that seemed to arrive in a never-ending stream - minimum 5 course dinners. Friendly staff too. Despite the daily hiking, we definitely put on weight here!

The Kaprun-Zell am See SommerKarte is a real Godsend. Free entry to the majority of the main attractions in the area, and a decent discount for the others. It really makes up for the fact that Austria in general is quite a pricey place to stay.

Welcoming hotel, excellent facilities and accommodation. Food outstanding. Patio has glorious views of the Kitzsteinhorn and is a lovely suntrap, good place to have a pre-prandial drink in the evening.

Superb centre for walking on the high ridges, visiting the Mooserboden reservoirs and Zell am See for a boat trip. All free on the Zell amd See and Kaprun sommer karte. We'd go back anytime!
