Our family stayed here for a weeks skiing in Feb 07. We arrived late 10pm but the hotel had kept the restaurant open for us and had a nice 4 course meal awaiting us, much appreciated after a long days travel.
The hotel has very new parts, and the original. Our room was in the older style, the room was spacious and well fitted, very, very clean but we found the bathroom a little dated.
The pool in the basement was small but perfect for a quick swim, the kids loved the high powered jet in the pool. The spa are for over 16's, was very modern with several different rooms - Sauna, Steam, Relaxation etc. As usual in Germany/Austria many guests were naked, so be aware if you're shy!
We all loved the food in the hotel, breakfast was comprehensive and filling the evening meal was fantastic, lots of small courses but all delicious. (Those wanting quantity over quality may feel wanting at the end of the meal). A couple of small gripes were that you had to drink bottled water at €4.5 a bottle and that the kids meals were alomst always accompanied by chips. The wine was quite expensive too, around €32 a bottle.
The hotel has a small boot room with boot warmers, nice for this to be on ground floor level rather than the usual basement.
All the staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful and a real credit to the owners.
One area we thought could be improved was the bar area, the new bar area seems a little out of place on a winters evening in Austria as it's very contemporary and a little cold. The old bar area is too close to part of the hotels restaurant so you felt like you were interuppting people eating (plus the fire wasn't lit each night).
The real result with this hotel is it's location to the ski school meeting point, directly behind, it's literally 25 meters away. Most groups meet here each morning then set off to their respective destinations. During our stay due to the poor snow the kids area had no snow so they were taken to the Lechnerberg area about 300m further up where the snow was managed.
The ski bus stop in either direction was abour a 3 minute walk away. Be warned from leaving the hotel to getting to the top of the second gondola on the Kitzsteinhorn takes approx. 1 hour. The walk to the Maiskogel runs can be walked in about 5 minutes.
Kaprun itself is a lovely Austrian village, that has some charming areas and nice bars hotels. Lots of ski shops too, some selling cheap skiis from €199, some much more expensive.
We would have no issues returning to this hotel however I would try to book directly and get one of the more modern rooms shown on their website.
