The school is now the visitor center for the site. The first floor is open and showcases items like his Nobel Peace Prize and official Presidential Portrait. Well worth the stop if you are in Plains!

“Very worthwhile”

This is the old Plains High School where Mr and Mrs. Carter once attended. It is now a historic site, with all sort of memorabilia but is also used for community functions. We went to the evening Christmas Community Sing, and had the best time.

“Plains, Georgia - Home of a True Stateman”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2011

As a Georgian, Jimmy Carter has been a great person whom I have long admired. So going to Plains was a trip that I long relished. But my expectations were greatly overwhelmed by what I saw and experienced. My first stop was at the local high school that has been converted into a Visitor Center and is now a part of the National Park system. The Center has several pieces of memorabilia, film clips and records of this great statesman and his family mingled with threads about the many factors in his life and development. There is a great tribute to his early teachers and other aspects of his early education. The Center also contains an honest asessment of his successes and flaws as a president.
After leaving the Center, it is a short ride out to the old farm that his family owned. The volunteer staff there was extremely nice. Try some of their boiled peanuts at the reception. There are recored messages all along at various stops to enlighten the visitors about the activities that occurred on the farm. If you are city kid, ask one of the staff to explain to you what some of the tools are used for. The grounds have a few animals including peacocks.
However, the highlight of the trip for me was to visit Maranatha Baptist Church to attend Mr. Carter's Sunday school class. Arrive early to get a good seat. Of course there is the staff of Secret Service agents and the church personnel, but it is all worth the effort. One member of the church will give specific instructions about the protocol, so listen very closely. Finally, The Man arrives. He usually talks about the things he and his wife are currently working on. Because of his vast years of experience, he takes great effort in applying the principles of the Bible lesson to everyday events. After church, he and his wife will take pictures with every visitor who wants to. Just have your camrea ready to roll!!
