As well as bed and breakfast rooms, the Pension Antonia has a couple of self-catering apartments. We spent four nights in the smaller of the two (‘Bergblick’) in October 2008. This apartment is at the top of the building, which means good views, but low ceilings. The owners, Mr and Mrs Bugarschnitz, were away at the time, so Mr Bugarschnitz’s parents were in charge. Despite the fact that they didn’t speak English, and we didn’t speak German, we managed to get everything we needed.

As a place to stay, it was very good. The location, only about 30 yards from the lake, but close to the centre of the village, is perfect. (Technically, it is not on the lakefront - the Pension Antonia occupies one half of a building - the half away from the lake - but it is close.) It would have been quiet, but the hotel next door was having major building work done while we were there! There is a good view from the living room and bedroom toward the hills. The rooms were a good size, and were pleasant, attractively furnished, generally clean and in good order. The bed was very comfortable. The shower room, while very small, was very good. And the price was surprisingly good. Surprising, because when we emailed, the price we were quoted was less than the price stated on the website.

The apartment, was not, however, perfect. Because it is at the top of the building, the ceilings of the rooms are low - about 6’7” - and anyone over 6’4” would find the shower cramped. The coomed ceilings, and particularly the beams (which are papered over in the bedroom and living room, but visible in the kitchen) are easy to bump heads on. The pillows and sheets on the bed were very clean, but for some reason, there were hairs on the duvet covers. There were a couple of floorboards in the living room that creaked.

The kitchen had a reasonable number of dishes, a small fridge, a couple of electric rings to cook on, as well as a toaster and a coffee maker. There was no electric kettle, and no oven (either microwave or conventional). There was a lot of cupboard space - more than anyone is ever likely to use.

Would I go back? Yes. For me, the good points strongly outweigh the minor irritations.
