We retraced the Sound of Music sites on our own and like in the movie this was the grand finale. Growing up watching the movie you aren't sure what is real and what is just a movie set. This was the real thing and it looked more grand in person. When I walked into St. Michael's there was a silence though there were many people. It was very inviting even with the very ornate gold structures and life like figures. The beautiful marble floors and mantles were very cool to the touch but left you with a comforting feeling.

We shopped at the gift shop, visited the stores and relaxed with an ice cream. There were a lot of visitors. The people were nice and somehow don't think they mind sharing their church with all of us.

The Basilica was captivating and took you back to the Sound Of Music wedding. Lovely interior and plenty to buy in the gift shop. The Mondsee area is stunning. If you do visit please allow yourself time to explore Mondsee have a coffee at one of the coffee shops and walk down to the lake and enjoy the view

While we visited as part of a Bobs tours Sound of Music tour, this church is much more than just another stop along the tour. In fact, once inside it's very easy to see why the film producers chose this church for the wedding instead of any number of similar sized churches back in Salzburg.

The fairly ordinary yellow facade hides a stunning pink marble interior. It's light and airy, and obviously the perfect place for a film wedding. A small shop just inside sells the usual souvenirs and gladly accepts donations. Parts of the church date back to the 12th century. You can see these older walls at the entrance as you go in the left side door.

Although very beautiful inside, the church does have one distinctly bizarre feature. Built into the large altar are five skeletons; regally dressed and bejewelled. In the sheer ornateness of the place they are easy to miss unless pointed out.

This church wouldn't have been used for the Sound of Music film unless it was the most outstanding church interior in the area. That's reason enough for a visit.

A beautiful basilica known for the Sound of Music movie. Pick up a holy water for a souvenir in the front entrance.
