Hotel Krone
Ranked #6 of 11 Hotels in Mondsee
Reviewed September 21, 2010

Stayed there at the end of August with wife, sister and parents who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. We arrived in our hire car at the rear of the hotel, where there's a very pleasant terrace serving meals and drinks. Parking in the small car park was immediately a problem, and this continued more or less throughout our ten-day stay. (However, there's a new, free public car park five mins' walk away behind the Schloss, which was a life-saver.) Welcome was very friendly and organised. We were given rooms in the old part of the house, with no lift, though as parents are fit, this wasn't a problem for us; indeed the exercise was a welcome antidote to the Wienerschnitzels! (There did seem to be a newer extension, but we never did discover if rooms there offered a higher standard of decor and comfort.) Our rooms were just about OK - all different, mostly modernish but with some oddly chosen period details of indeterminate origin e.g. old paintings. Some lights did not work, and some of the curtain rails and windows were defective. Overall, the atmosphere was quite heavy and dark. One major problem was noise, either from the kitchen (my sister's initial room was adjacent to it and she had to be moved) or from the street at night, or indeed from the church bells which rang the quarters and the hours all night (why can't they do as the Spanish and turn the damn things off during the hours of darkness???). The public rooms - all quite varied and seemingly recently renovated in light wood - are mostly geared to eating and drinking, with very limited areas for relaxing; the bar is tiny. We ate at the hotel on average every other night, and found the food well-prepared and of generous proportions, both meat and fish dishes. There was a preponderance of McDonald's-style chips, but you could resort to the ubiquitous parsley potatoes or dumplings as an alternative. As so often on the Continent, cooked vegetables were in short supply, though we did enjoy some of the excellent Austrian salads. The choice of wine by the glass was limited, and full bottles - curious for a country which produces so much - on the pricey side (could be because of tax?). The breakfast was adequate without excelling, and probably not quite so good as that at other establishments in the same price range in Austria/Germany. The only hot food available was a boiled or scrambled egg cooked to order. Still, there was a good selection of breads and some meat and cheese, preserves and even cake so that we did not go wanting. Service generally was fairly prompt and polite, though on occasions orders were forgotten, or arrived twice! Overall, we had a not atypical Austrian experience and enjoyed our stay. Mondsee is a trifle touristy, but mostly in the form of day-trippers, so it is quiet at night (apart from the nighttime revellers and Glocken mentioned above!), and of course it's a wonderful base for touring around. That was the second time I'd stayed in the town and I think that in future I'd opt perhaps for Fuschl or St Gilgen (in which latter I've also stayed twice). We found the range of restaurants somewhat limited and in some cases not great value for money, but I suppose one has to be prepared for this in the Salzkammergut. There are, however, several pizzerias if you like that sort of thing.(BTW, thank God the plague of wasps we've experienced in the past at this time of year failed to materialise!)
