My son and I stayed in cabin #3 for 6 nights in early July...we selected Custer as a central point for exploring the Black Hills and surrounding area, and the Shady Rest was the perfect place for us to return in the evening!

Our particular unit had a comfortable queen bed and single pull-out sleeper. There is a fully-equipped kitchen, along with a charcoal grill on the front porch. My husband joined us for part of our stay, and it got a little cozy during that time...the unit is not large. But there is a great porch in the front...we spent most of our time relaxing there...we saw great sunsets, chatted with our neighbors, and saw wildlife early in the morning!

The property is within walking distance to the main street in Custer...there are several shops, restaurants, and a great little grocery store which sold freshly-ground bison...made for some great burgers on our grill!

Finally, we loved meeting Ann, John and family...they were so warm and welcoming, and gave us great recommendations about the area. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again!

My husband and I rented a cabin at Shady Rest Motel on our vacation last week. It was exactly what we were looking for. The one-room cabin (#9) with kitchenette was cozy and comfortable. We didn't do any cooking, but wanted a place to eat simple breakfasts and lunches. The owners (Ann and John) were friendly and helpful. We were able to walk to town to restaurants, shops and the grocery store. The on-site hot tub was nice, though probably more welcome in fall than in the heat of summer. From our location, it was easy to make our way to various Black Hills attractions (Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, etc.). They offer free wi-fi and tvs. Our cell phones didn't work in that part of SD, but we were able to use the office phone to make reservations at area attractions when we needed to.

Room Tip: The photos online are helpful, and I emailed Ann with some questions about specific cabins.

The owners were personal and the rooms were spacious and clean. Very impressed!!!! The rustic atmosphere and the mountain views were splendid. The value was incredible. The quality of service surpassed my priority club membership. Whenever I am in Custer I will always use these facilities versus the chains.

My family & I stayed here for 3 nights July 19th-21st in cabin 8. We had booked in advance and after speaking with Ann on the phone, I knew this was the place to stay! We really enjoyed them! They sit nestled up and have a great view of the town. We had our own deck, with table and chairs and a grill...that we enjoyed very much. The cabins have a kitchen, and our daughters really liked having their own bedroom with TV. Since we were pretty close to everything, we would spend our days out doing things (Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Custer State Park, Bear Country & more) and then have a great home away from home to return to in the evening for some relaxation time. These are great little cabins with everything you could need, while staying in Custer! We will be back for sure! Thanks to John & Ann for making us feel right at home!

We were lucky to get a room here about a week before our trip. It's a great location- off the main drag, but still only a few minutes from Custer State Park. The rooms are pretty basic- ours had a queen bed, small bath w/shower, and a kitchenette. There's a TV, but we didn't spend much time in the room to watch it.

For us, the thing we liked most is everyone gets their own "cabin," so there's no issue with hearing the noise next door.

Owners are very pleasant, but they certainly stay out of your way. Would definitely stay here again.
