“Wonderful stay at Chief Motel in Custer S. Dakota!”
Reviewed September 8, 2009

This motel was a real find! The room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and quiet. The beds were very comfortable. Also, there is a wonderful indoor extra long heated pool with a nice hot tub and jacuzzi. Above all, the owners were very friendly and helpful!

Big room - large enough for two couples travelling together. Clean and comfortable and with your own designated parking space. Staff friendly and extremely helpful. Good location in centre of Custer with two very good restaurants just next door.

Enjoyed the pool, sauna and hot tub.

This is not a fancy place, but it's clean and we were quite comfortable here. We got a 2br suite so our 8 year old could sleep separately from us and it worked out well. The kids also enjoyed the indoor pool and we liked being walking distance from the restaurants and shops in town. They also gave us a pass to go through Custer park for free.

this motel was very accomodating and nice. when our teenager decided she wanted to come at the last minute, the owners were able to help us find an unexpected solution when switching rooms was not an option(no vacancy during peak time). upon arrival, we were given the Custer "postcard tour," which was priceless. the room we had was more than we expected-very clean, pastel sheets and quilts. very cozy. restaurants next door were very convenient and the food was good. The Custer area was awesome. We had to leave early due to an illness back home & the motel was very gracious about this. When we return to Custer, we will stay here again.

They know they are the #1 rated motel in Custer and I think they jack up the price because of it. The rooms were clean, but had a slight musty odor. The TV was small (19in) with no premium channels. The room did have a small frig and a microwave. The worst part for us was the Wi-fi. We like to use it to plan out our trip, but the signal wasn't strong enough to reach our room. We had to go to the pool building or sit out by the office to get a signal. The pool was big and they do have a hot tub. We paid $109 a night during the week and $129 for Saturday night. The motel across the street, which looked nicer, advertised "All rooms $59." There were other motels in Custer and Hill City that advertised prices under $70. We did book online, which usually works well, but all of the hotels and motels with online booking were around $110 a night, so I thought that was the going rate. I'd recommend calling around if price is a concern for you. It would have been worth $70 or less, but not $110.

We didn't make reservations for Custer so when we pulled into town only the 'Motels' and 'Inns' had a handfull of rooms left open. We got the last room here for the night and it was clean - the beds comfortable - the staff friendly. If we had to, we'd stay here again.

It was a great stay, we had 2 small children with us so we got the 2 room unit. It worked really well for our family, got to put the kids to bed and still have time to ourselves. The room was very clean, it is an older hotel, but they really try to maintain it. Lots of towels for the pool was great. Kids loved the pool. It was a little chilly so didn't stay in long, but the hot tub was nice too. Great central location, Custer was not to busy and easy to get to places, Beds were comfy. Yes the air conditioner was a little noisy, but what hotel isn't. Our son got car sick and they were very helpful with cleaning supplies for the car. Very nice staff. Avoid The Cattleman resturant next door, not impressed. Expensive and not very good food. We really liked the local dinner a few doors down and the Cowboy Cafe in the other direction, great staff and great Prime Rib! there is a little grocery store in the middle of town that was good too.
