“Homey and clean”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

This maybe an old property but it is comfortable and clean. IT IS NOT THE RITZ! I remember traveling in the '50s & '60s. This is what we stayed in then. The rooms are small, they still have old TVs but it is clean as a whistle.
The manager is cool. He discount cards for everywhere in town it seems and he is more than happy to help you find your way around. Ask him for the "95 second tour of Custer State Park" if he doesn't offer it.
Breakfast is not included BUT ask for coupons/discount cards for breakfast.
Glad we stayed here!

This motel is in the center of town and within walking distance to all Custer shops and restaurants. The pool and hot tub are nice, but was packed with kids most of the time so we only used once. The 25 cent soda machine is out of order, so that was a bummer too. The rooms are a little small, but VERY clean. We stayed here 6 nights, and Custer is centrally located for all major attractions in the area. I.E. Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, 1880 Train and others. The breakfast coupons are great, but the service at the restaurant no so much. They seem more interested in serving the locals, but the food was good. You definitely need to have a slice of pie from the Purple Pie Palace across the street(which also has discount coupon at desk) The owner is very nice and helpful in answering questions about the Black Hills area. We will definitely stay here again, should our travels bring us this way.

We were just looking for a place to sleep while in the Black Hills. The rooms were very reasonably priced and the owners were wonderful. The only problem I had was the door to the room had a space under it and I worried about things getting in from outside. But we had no claw lung visitors so it was fine. A nice place and we'd stay again

Our room was very clean and comfortable, and the staff were very helpful and friendly - giving us a place to go to on the Fourth of July when our car got a flat, and giving us helpful advice on the area's attractions. Everything worked in the room, and the location in Custer can't be beat. The beds are super comfortable too. The place where the $2 coupon breakfast is is not the greatest though, but the Purple Pie Place (they give a $2 coupon for pie) is very good.

The owner was extremely friendly, and we got a room that was very clean and suited our needs perfectly. The bathrooms were clean, and it was the most towels I've ever seen in one room. The water pressure was good and the water was hot. Great location right in the middle of Custer. If you want to overpay for fancy lobbies, this isn't your place. But if you want a clean room at a good price, this is for you.

We stayed at Chief Motel for 3 nights in June while attending awesome Crazy Horse volksmarch and visiting several national caves in area. Our double room was small but clean. Bath towels were clean and reasonably soft. Water pressure was good. Windows opened. Room had lights on only one side of bed and few electrical plugs. Room had no phone and our cell phone (Net-10) did not work in this area. Empty flower boxes outside room. Good ice machine. We used the free-entry pass for Custer State Park available with a 3-night stay. Staff were helpful, but not available 24/7. Pool is in separate building. Not sure we would stay here again, but overall a good value that met our needs as it was conveniently located for attractions.

My group stayed here a week and everyone loved the motel. If you're looking for clean - and I do mean CLEAN rooms- this is the motel for you! Bruce and Nancy bent over backwards to accommodate us. The guys loved the covered parking and clean towels for the bikes. The breakfast coupons for $1.99 are the bargain of the year - the restaurant is about a block from the motel and the breakfast was great. Overall, Custer, SD was such a friendly place. Would love to go back again and will definitely stay at the Chief Motel!. Again, CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are quiet. There is a covered porch all the way around the motel with chairs to just...
