On the way in from Custer State Park drive The Needles Highway up to Sylvan Lake and stop to hike the Cathedral Spires Trail. Take sufficient water on a warm day and enjoy the beautiful views around every corner. Afterwards proceed to Sylvan Lake for a nice swim and lunch.
If you stay in the park do drive the Wildlife Loop again and search for more Bizon.

Very easy to get here. They do have parking right in front of this trail. Take few minutes , stop, park and walk to the "cathedral" Tom take amazing pictures. If you don this have time to go to the trail, it's ok, the view is spectacular and the cathedral is right off the road!

This is a great little health break if you have been sitting in the car and just hopping in and out. It took about an hour to hike up and back. It is a bit challenging with a few large rocks or high steps. But the view of the valley is stunning. You also get a sense of size standing next to the spires.

I wasn't able to spend nearly as much time here as I would have liked, and the parking is a bit rough (considering you're on the edge of a mountain), but the hike was moderate and the views excellent.

Really beautiful hike that is well worth the time. It took us about 2.5 hours round trip and we are by no means pro hikers. I wore Vans, no pack, and a bottle of water in my back pocket. Bring your camera an binoculars as we saw mountain climbers (located at the very top flat section, look up and to your right) and goats (very top flat section up and straight ahead). There are a couple of steep sections where you have to lightly scramble, but it is totally manageable with obvious natural steps. Once you get the top flat section you can go right to finish the trail or left to go to Little Devil's Tower. The view is breathtaking and it feels like you have found a slice of Heaven on Earth. Super FUN and gorgeous scenery. Eat the raspberries, they are tasty.

The hike was fairly strenuous but manageable for us not athletic over 60s folks. The Cathedral Spires are amazing to see. Well worth the hike.

The Cathedral Spires hiking trail is beautiful. The location that it is pinned at on TripAdvisor is not correct though. The trail head is actually in the Needles Highway about half way through. The hike is slightly challenging with some large steps.

We hiked this trail during raspberry season, an added bonus! The trail is easy if you're the least bit fit. There are a couple of places that require a scramble, might not be a wise hike on a rainy day. In less than half hour you're among a "cathedral" of the geologic spires referred to as needles. One can hike further in various directions--we took the direction to Little Devil's Tower (seemed appropriate since we're associated with Duke University :) ). To obtain the "tower" requires a bit of a scramble up boulder faces, but worth the effort. From car to car about 2.5 - 3 hours
