Sylvan Lake Lodge restaurant is within the Custer State Park system. The lodge is beautiful and we started dinner by getting a bottle of wine from the bartender and sitting in the vaulted, Western lobby in cushiony leather sofas. The staff allowed us all the time we wanted there before seating us by the window in the dining room. Servers were dressed in black and were very professional and knowledgable. We started with the buffalo chiclic (terrifically tender pieces of buffalo on a stick to be dipped in a horseradish sauce). The salads were standard (but large) wedges and Ceasars. My roast pheasant with sage cornbread stuffing was superb and my husband enjoyed his elk pasta. It was nice to have well-prepared non-standard choices. The flourless chocolate cake with raspberries was a nice finish. Outside the window was a very nice view of the park. Later in summer we would have probably ended with a coffee on the large outdoor patio, but it was too cool the night we were there.

Whether your first or fiftieth visit to this area it is never disappointing. The paddleboats, picnic area and convenience store are all you need to enjoy this sweet lake with incredible setting.

This is one part of Custer State Park that is open all year. However, food service and boat rental is summer only. One of the most beautiful and peaceful lakes I've seen anywhere in the world. Great walking trail around the lake and through the rock passes. Charming any time, even in the winter. Bottom line: bring a camera and a relaxed attitude.

The one mile easy walk around the lake can be punctuated by fun climbing on the rocks around the lake. A beautiful place for a short hike or for staying a while.

We had lunch at the lodge. The food was good and you could see out to the lake down below. After we climbed on the rocks just outside the lodge for some pictures. We were also able to purchase a Custer State Park pass for the car at the front desk.
