Black Hills National Forest covers a huge portion of the Black Hills, and surrounds many towns, ranches, and homes. The Forest itself is enjoyable, particularly for hikers and sightseers. The real joy of the Forest are all the things in it or adjoining it. This includes National Parks, Caves, Mt. Rushmore, and even the tourist attractions in towns such as Hot Springs, Custer, Hill City, and Keystone. If you're into hiking or camping, stop by one of the National Forest offices and pick up information - especially a good map. Bottom line: real "mountain" forests in the middle of the prairie.
