“Beware! Rooms are not as pictured!”

Stayed in the lodge for a wedding in October. The pictures on the lodge website show the new section of the hotel and their large spacious rooms. The less expensive room is a cracker box at best 10x10 at the most. During booking over the phone at no point do they say you need a park permit... $15 when you check in. Stayed 2 nights and had no regular coffee in the rooms... only decaf. When I asked the front desk for regular she acted like there wasnt any until I kept asking then she begrudgingly retrieved some from a back room. Definitely would not recommend this as a place to stay. The beautiful view does not make up for the expensive inadequacies.

We were guests at a wedding and although we ended up in one of the smaller lodge rooms, no complaints here! The staff was very helpful, the breakfast buffet was great and the auditorium where the wedding reception took place was functional and cozy. The cabins looked like a great option nearer to the lake and we will try them out on our next visit. Very picturesque!!

Room Tip: Because this is an older lodge, the air quality is a bit dry. Bring your humidifier if you are on a...

We stayed in the newer part of the lodge for three nights in August. Had to change rooms after the first night because the room was just not configured correctly. Very awkward. The second room was quite nice. The food in the restaurant was good, expensive and the service was really slow. It didn't appear anyone was in charge so the wait staff adopted a very, slow leisurely pace. No one was seating the guests, so it was hit or miss getting a table. We liked the lodge and would return. It's a great location and wonderful setting.

I can not say enough positive things about Sylvan Lake Lodge and it's staff. We got married here on Oct. 11, one week after the blizzard of the century that dumped 3 feet of snow and knocked out power to most of the Black Hills. The staff at Sylvan worked countless hours to shovel snow, fix broken pipes, re-connect electricity, clean rooms and get everything perfect for the 120 family and friends that arrived at the lodge. The staff was also very accommodating, serving large parties in their restaurant (amazing food!), answering the many questions of our group members, keeping the fires lit and making us all feel at home.

The lodge itself is gorgeous, and has a great room to gather in with comfy couches, a fire place, and a bar (Eric makes a great mojito!). The first night I stayed in the newer section of the lodge in a king suite, as the Honeymoon Cabin was still without power, this room was huge, clean, big comfy bed, great little patio, etc. For the next 3 nights we were in the Honeymoon cabin.....this is a quaint little cabin but perhaps also the only thing I have to complain about at Sylvan Lake. The pros: nestled up on the rocks with a great little outdoor fire pit and amazing view; somewhat off on it's own away from other cabins; comfy king size bed. Cons: The bathroom is TINY and could use some updates/expansion; we started a fire in the gorgeous stone fireplace and the whole cabin filled up with smoke, setting off the fire alarm (seems as if there's a back-drafting problem?); if it's windy (one night/day we had 40 mph winds) the wind howls through the windows, being loud and drafty. We still had a great time staying in the honeymoon cabin, if it were middle of summer most of these things probably wouldn't have been an issue, aside from the bathroom.

We did visit other family members and friends at various cabins/lodge rooms throughout the property and they all seemed nice, clean, comfy, decorated nicely (awesome blankets on the beds!). There are 2 separate groups of cabins, the 400's (up on the hill by lodge) and the 500's (down by the lake)....I would suggest getting a cabin in the 500's group, as it is closer to the lake. The Honeymoon cabin is up on the hill in the 400's section.

Overall, if you are looking for a place to gather all your friends and family for a weekend-long, outdoor gathering in the beautiful Black Hills....and have a wedding!....this is a GREAT place to do it! The staff is amazing, the accommodations are great, the food is delicious, the reception venue is gorgeous. All in all, we had the most perfect wedding weekend ever. I would highly recommend Sylvan Lake Lodge for a destination wedding!

Room Tip: Cabins: Ask for one in the 500's group, down by the lake.

We stayed in one of the cabins by the lake. It is not luxurious, but we had a wonderful time. Our cabin had 2 queen beds, decent sized bathroom and a small but functional kitchen area with a microwave, 2-burner stove and a small fridge. The cabins have heat and air conditioning, phones and TV. There is a fire pit and a picnic table just outside the door. Our cabin was just up the hill from one of the general stores and the lake. Sylvan Lake, by the way, is one of the most peaceful and quiet places I have ever seen. And the best part of it all was NO BUGS! No spiders, crickets, cicadas, mosquitoes or flies! For a bug-o-phobe like me, it was heavenly. Do bring your own paper towels as they are quite pricey at the general store. Do take the Wildlife Loop and find the bison and burros. Awesome night sky with about a zillion stars. Would go there again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: If you are going to get a cabin, get one that's close to the lake.

we stayed in the main lodge. the room was very clean and super spacious. the décor was rustic and nice. we ate at the hotel restaurant and it was ok. I had a burger but the bun wasn't that good. steak was had by another party and they said it was good. the dessert was very good. a little expensive.

BEWARE, there are two sections of this hotel, one has very old rooms about the size of a dorm room. The other section has very nice rooms. So ask before you book! The cabins are also very nice. However, we had one of the small old rooms. The room was clean and the service friendly. Very quiet hotel.

Room Tip: Ask which section of the hotel you will be in, the new side or the old side.

Jennifer20087, thanks so much for taking the time to write a response about your stay here! I’m sorry that the room wasn’t up to your expectations. The lodge was built in 1938 and certainly offers historical rooms but unfortunately there isn’t much we can do about the size of the rooms. It’s nice to hear your thoughts about our staff also. Friendly customer service is exactly what we go for and we’re glad to hear that is what you received. Thanks again for your review and we hope to see you again soon!
