We booked a cabin that ostensibly sleeps 5 for just the 2 us - because we wanted to have a good view of the lake & got a great view. Only 2 of the cabins are actually on the lake, so be sure to confirm view if this is important to you.

Cabin was clean & the furniture (hewn trees) seemed fairly new. One tiny bedroom had double bed & a single bed with barely room to walk. So much furniture that the door would not close. The other double bed was in the main room with room to get in from only one side. The only other furniture was a small table & 4 hardback chairs. Five people would be very cramped in this cabin. Tiny bathroom.

Cabin has tiny fridge, stove, coffee pot & microwave - but absolutely no utensils or dishes. If you want to cook (or even eat takeout), you have to bring everything.

There is a flat screen TV - but the cable wasn't working. Someone from the office came & tried unsuccessfully to fix it. The next morning we asked for & were promised a partial refund because the TV didn't work -- refund never came.

Be sure to take a flashlight if you plan to return to cabin after dark.

Thank you for your review of Legion Lake. One of the improvements we have made due to
customer requests is we now have pots, pans and dishes in our 5 and 7 person cabins. We
work hard to make improvements to make every guest experience as positive as possible. My hope is that you went home with many stories and memories of Custer State Park. Thank you again for your review.

We stayed in a 5-person Housekeeping cabin (#11) on Legion Lake. The cabin was very pricey - $175 a night. It was two rooms and private bathrooom – a sun room with a twin bed and a double bed, then a larger room with kitchenette (mini fridge, stove top burners, sink, microwave, toaster, and 4-cup coffee pot with coffee and filters), seating area with a very rickety table, and another double bed. The curtains and trees kept some of the sun out, so we didn't have trouble sleeping a little later in the morning. We had ample sleeping room for our family of five, although counter space was limited and you could barely fit four around the table. For a cabin for 5, the table should have been larger and had five chairs. Outside we had a campground grill, a picnic table, and some chairs.

Cons – no dishes, utensils, pots or pans. You need to supply your own.
Not enough seating or table space inside for a family of five.
Linens were pretty worn.
Pricey
Staff at check-in were distant and unfriendly

Pros – Ideal location – 10 minutes from the Visitor's Center and its many programs.
Air-conditioning, flat screen tv (which we didn't use), and free Wifi in our cabin
Close to the Wildlife loop and town of Custer (about an hour from Sylvan Lake area and an hour from Mount Rushmore)
Right on Lake Legion – which had a playground and a small sandy beach for swimming. (Not all the cabins are as close to the beach and lake as we were. We requested to be close and they accommodated that request). We visited Sylvan lake and it was very congested and busy. The swimming area could not be walked to from the cabins. It was also quite far north in the park and not close to many of the other areas. It makes a good half day trip from Lake Legion. Driving around we were pleased we had chosen Lake Legion area. Blue Belle would be a good choice for families wanting to do the chuckwagon and horseback riding activities. The park is quite large and travel between points is slow.

Overall, you have to decide if the great location is worth the high price tag.

I would like to thank you first for your review. We now have put pots, pans, and dishes into all the 5 and 7 person cabins. I appreciate that I receive feedback from our guests on what they would like to see and what needs to be improved. We do our best and take your input very seriously. We strive to achieve strong customer service and I am upset to see that our front desk people didn't welcome you properly. I assure you that it will not happen again and we look forward to serving you again someday. Every guest that comes to Legion Lake is considered family.

I realize this is one of the hottest vacation spots in the US (Custer State Park) but I still feel our cabin was overpriced. The only place to sit down was at a small table and chair set with only three chairs and the cabin was supposed to be for up to 5 people. The beds were so soft I felt like I was sleeping in a hammock. I would say this place is on par with an average motel but priced like a four star hotel. I have stayed in much nicer state park cabins for a fraction of the cost.

This was going to be our splurge night on our week long trip to the hills. We stayed in a 5 person housekeeping cabin. Paying $175 rate, once all fees are figured in, the cost was $190. For that amount of money you hope for a nice stay. I made reservations in January for our July stay, so you would hope we would get a decent cabin. We arrived 1.5 hours before the normal check in time and I asked if our cabin would be ready. The lady at the counter didn't even go to check - she just said they don't let anyone in until 2pm. Fine their preference, but really, the place wasn't full! I had read the reviews about the beds being soft and believe them! It was like being on a ever moving marshmallow. On top of that, the fitted sheets on all the beds are rough and pilly! We actually had sheets along and put them on instead. The firepit was patched together with rocks. See the picture. Pretty much unusable and it was 20 feet from our neighbor's nicer fire pit. No view of the lake. Some cabins had a view. Other cabins had new screen doors - ours didn't. There were updates. The bathrooms were nice and newer. The carpet seemed newer. The cabins however are built on old foundations, the walls are older and you just wonder if there are any creatures about. There is Dish Network. When sitting in the cabin, I kept seeing dusty spots. So it really wasn't cleaned well. To really make these cabins nice and worth the $190 a night, they are worth redoing with a full tear down. It really just felt like they are overcharging for polished you know what.

The place had a mini fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, two burner stovetop. Bring your own pots, pans, plates, silverware - anything you need for eating. Sheets are provided, but they are rough and pilly. Believe the reviews about the beds. They are just horrible! Really, isn't that the most important aspect of any sleeping establishment?!! There are curtains on each individual window. Many don't fit properly to keep light out. They would do much better putting a large rod across the top of all of them with a nice black out curtain that could be pulled across all of them.
I could accept all of this if I were paying $60 a night, but not $190! We stayed at Rafter J comfort cabin and it was wonderful in comparison for only $118 total - there we needed to bring our own sheets, but with what were were provided at Legion Lake, our own sheets were preferable anyway. If you're looking to stay in Custer SP, I chose Legion Lake over Blue Bell due to the lake. It make me wonder if Blue Bell would have been the better choice for the price. Upon driving by, the cabins at Blue Belll looked much newer.

My husband and I stayed at he Legion Lake resort for 4 days during our two stay in the black hills . The Main lodge is right on Legion Lake , which offers a restaurant and gift store. Non motorized boat rentals are available. Also Starbucks is available! The sleeping cabins are up the road behind the main lodge . Cabins are tucked away among the pine trees. We were lucky to get a end cabin . The room had two queen beds and a very large bathroom . The room was equipped with a lcd tv and dish network. Maid service was provided daily . Each cabin had a picnic table and fire pit . Bring your own cooking utensils. Bison and deer were prevalent during our stay . One bison decided to nap two cabins down on the porch Nice trail around the lake , to take sunset stroll. If you enjoy hotels but want to embrace nature stay at Legion Lake resort.

Room Tip: Request a end cabin

We appreciate your review of Legion Lake Lodge. We take pride in making sure our guests feel welcomed and part of our Legion Lake family. It is great to hear that we were able to offer you a positive experience and so glad to hear that you were able to enjoy the wildlife up close and personal. The buffalo are such a beautiful and majestic animal to have so close but keeping at a safe distance. There is so much to explore and enjoy here in Custer State Park and that is why so many of our guests return to their favorite spots and come back to experience what they missed. I hope we are able to accomodate you again in the near future.
