Spent a couple of nights here recently with friends. Great location and decent rooms. Nothing special - but clean and decent appointments. Had a few meals at the Lodge. Food was only average and service was spotty, but friendly. Went on the Buffalo Safari - arranged by the Lodge - and aside from freezing our tails, it was really fun and worth while. Would be nice to have wifi in the rooms - it worked fine in the public areas - and despite their saying it was in the rooms, none of our group could get a signal. From my research this looks like the best place around the State Park - but I still only give it an average.

Room Tip: There are different lodges here - stay at Creekside Lodge for newest and best rooms.

Our son got married here last weekend, and it couldn't have been more perfect. Of course we were all a little concerned about the weather, getting our grandparents around, having food available, etc. What a waste of time worrying about those things! Our Creekside Hotel was lovely. Very clean, comfortable and roomy. We had the rehearsal dinner here with almost 90 people, the food was EXCELLENT along with the Service. Amanda, the Banquet Manager really did a good job. The wedding was outdoors, and they had it set up for us beautifully. OMG, it was absolutely stunning and magical. Again Amanda really outdid herself and was very patient with all of us. Craig made sure we had rides for the grandparents who couldn't walk, Amber helped get all the meals and parties set up, and they were very professional and answered every question very pleasantly. One of our sons rented a huge cabin for several family members, that was really a neat place to stay! Would be great for families!
I highly HIGHLY recommend this place for a family reunion, wedding, party, anything! The food is SO good, so fresh, and was presented beautifully!!! I could have not been more pleased.
Thank you all again for the wonderful time, so good our son and new daughter in law were able to enjoy the festivities knowing all was taken care of so well.
We will be back!!!! :-)

Room Tip: The Creekside Lodge has very nice handicapped accessible rooms. All the rooms were very nice, some...

We actually did not stay at the lodge but were trying to make a reservation, which included our dog. One day the staff said there is a room available with a patio - then the next day the rooms were supposedly not pet-friendly anymore and I could not make the resevation. There was no willingness to accomodate us - it was very misleading and frustrating.

We had been planning our fall photographic fun to the National Parks of South Dakota for many months!! I used a Trip Advisor forum and multiple phone calls to the South Dakota Dept. Of Tourism to help me plan our first getaway in many months.

Disappointingly, the day before we departed, the federal government closed the national parks, and I was distraught. My wife, the utter optimist, assured me that we still had a visit Custer State Park, so off we flew from Ohio to Rapid City on October 2.

On October 3, we checked in for a 3 day stay at the State Game Lodge, fully aware of the possibility of impending severe weather. Our room was fine with all of the amenities one would expect of a rustic lodge. We had a great meal graciously served by Alfredo early that evening, sat around the comfortable fireplace in the lodge, and then retired to our room.

At 9:00 PM (Thursday), the wind howled and the snow blew heavily, rapidly accumulating. At 6:00 AM Friday, we lost electricity. The front desk attendant told me that 2 out of the 3 electrical lines supplying the lodge were "down." She graciously moved us to a room with electricity. The storm raged until about 9:00 AM on Saturday morning--a full 36 hours. This dangerous storm dumped about 36 inches of snow, knocked out power for thousands, and left campers stranded. Phone service, both landline and cell, was completely disrupted. Ergo, there was no outside communication for quite some time.

The events we witnessed during this time renewed my faith in mankind! The staff of the lodge assured the well being of all of the guests. With most electricity gone, much food spoiled. They made certain that there was hot food for breakfast & supper each day and served cold cuts for lunch. As "captives," they could have overcharged us for meals, but did NOT. They were more than reasonable. They always made sure there was a fire in the fireplace. They kindly and graciously answered every stupid and redundant question asked by the anxious guests.

The "standout" in this whole adventure was CRAIG GILL, the general manager of the lodge. He demonstrated leadership and compassion that truly deserves recognition. Not only did he assure the safety and comfort of the guests, he also assured the wellbeing of each member of his staff. He made certain that each staff member continued to perform his or her duties, but also made certain each was safe & as comfortable as possible. He had them stay in unoccupied lodge rooms and in the adjacent Creekside Lodge rather than having them return to the "employee dorm" where there was no power or heat

There is absolutely no question that without Craig's leadership, our stay would have been a chaotic mess instead of an adventure. We left the lodge on Sunday morning (October 7), and travelled I cleared Roads to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary (whichI shall review later). When we left, full power had still not been restored to the lodge.

I highly recommend the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park to anyone travelling in the Black Hills. The rooms are comfortable with a large screen television. There is WiFi. Don't expect a 5 star "hoity toity" ski lodge. That is not the purpose of this property. It provides comfortable more-than-adequate, fairly priced accommodations with an excellent dining room, and a phenomenal staff. Standouts include (but are not limited to Craig Gill (manager), Shirley, Alfredo, and the front desk staff. Visit and enjoy!!!!

We loved staying here and plan to return in the summer when more attractions are open. Traveling mid-October most everything was closed but we did find some fun things to do and enjoyed the relaxation and not running from attraction to attraction. Custer was nice but keystone was a complete ghost town.
We stayed in a three room housekeeping cabin. Loved having our own kitchen to eat at home. We brought a grill and griddle with us which was a good choice. I recommend bringing a baking sheet and cake pan if you will need one. The kitchen was just big enough to make a decent dinner.
The rooms were a decent size and we slept well. We were tired from all our daily adventures. It was a little drive to get anywhere but we didnt mind because the scenery was gorgeous and we loved the quietness of the resort and room for the kids to run and play.
The bathroom was decent. We just ran out of hot water quickly. The heat is very dry there so we boiled water at night to add moisture to the air.
Bring camping chairs with you to sit outside around the fire pit. You can pick up down branches for your fire so you don't have to purchase firewood.
It was very fun to wake up every morning and look for the buffalo.
The bar staff was friendly.
We did leave a night early to get a head start on our drive (and because we did most everything at that point that wa open) and they canceled our last night with no issues. However we were going to have to switch cabins for the last night (the cabin we were in was previously booked and we knew this in advance) so I think that is the reason for them being so willing to accommodate.
Excited to go back during regular season and enjoy more of the black hills!

Firstly we have to say the location is great and the buildings wonderful in general. The first impression given by the front desk staff (with one notable exception) was poor. OK we arrived a little before official check in but others were being allocated rooms. We were made to feel very uncomfortable about asking for our room and were told in no uncertain terms that it was not ready. Fair enough but this attitude continued over the next 2 hours and beyond the "guaranteed" check in time. One receptionist did try her best to speed up our room but was continually over-ruled by her colleague. We tried to get lunch whilst we were waiting but there were several coach parties in the restaurant which was absolutely filled to capacity. Fortunately a friendly guide told us we could get the same food in the bar which was empty - a good tip for others. We stayed in the Creekside Cabin which is over the road from the main hotel. The bedrooms are smaller than we imagined and the whole cabin is a bit too "old world" and could do with a makeover but was fine in general for a family without being exceptional. We ate breakfast and dinner in the dining room as there are few options nearby and the food was again fine without being anything to write home about.

Custer State Park itself is wonderful and this hotel could be so much better with a little effort from management.

We had visited Custer State Park a few times (maybe one of best state parks period) and we wanted to be there during the annual buffalo roundup. I reserved a cabin several months in advance #7 as it turned out. Nice accomodations, very secluded yet within walking distance of main lodge and the art/craft festival area.

Room Tip: For isolation choose cabin #7
