“Cozy, beautiful spot for lodging and eating”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

We enjoyed two nights in one of the motel rooms at the State Game Lodge. Our room was nicely appointed with a unique and beautiful pine beetle ceiling. I especially liked the bedspreads with a rustic theme. It would probably be a good idea for the staff to consider what the landscaping is probably doing to the efficiency of the room HVAC units. It looks nicer to hide them on the outside, but they're not intended to have bushes right next to the exhaust.
We had two dinners and one breakfast in the lovely dining rooms. The food and service were both fine. The bar was especially cozy, and the staff there was great.

We will not be back. Why? Although we loved the location and the staff was very friendly and accommodating to our requests and minor needs, the cabin and linens were simply old and not clean. The main lodge was nice but we didn't use it. The TVs in our room were modern flat screens that really contrasted with the old kitchen bathroom and bedroom and linens. All could be forgiven but it was just stale, old and dirty. Mouse poops in the kitchen cabinets, poor electrical lighting, and dirty white socks after walking for a few minutes on the carpets.

The location and setting of the Lodge are great. The history of the place is fun to be a part of. Wildlife right on the front lawn is cool. The rooms are small - as you would expect in an old inn, but nicely decorated and clean. The restaurant is a little overpriced, but the service and food are very good. The only downside of my experience was the front desk staff - very cold and unfriendly and not very helpful in general.

If you plan on eating at the Lodge (its pretty much the only choice for miles), eat and drink before you go to your meal....the wait for well below average (local Denny's service is vastly superior) is interminable.

I liked the historical nature of this place, great ambiance and good choices for types of rooms and cabins. I stayed in a cabin with two beds, very comfortable and in a nice secluded setting. The restaurant was very good with nice choices to consider for dinner and breakfast was either a buffet or off the menu. This was a good value for staying at such an historical site.

Room Tip: The cabins were the best deal and very comfortable in a nice setting.

We enjoyed our stay here. The rooms were a little dark, but were a reasonable size.
Evening meal was very good, and the service excellent. Breakfast was a buffet, and again the staff were very helpful. There were coach parties staying at this hotel, but this was not a problem.

My wife and I stayed at the State Game Lodge in May. Sorry for the tardy review. The location is perfect, right on the scenic drive through Custer State Park. The wildlife watching was fabulous! Our room was nice but missing a few light bulbs...like in the bedside lamps and by the sofa. We mentioned the missing bulbs to the front desk staff and they said they would take care of it. Nothing happened and the process repeated itself when we asked again the next day. Frustrating.

It was early in the season and one would think the staff would be on their "best behavior" but they basically just went through the motions One exception was our waiter for two dinners...very good person (and great waiter) originally from Mexico.

This would be a five star rating if the staff had a sense of urgency.
