Although Jewel cave is quite a bit more ornate than Wind Cave it still was nothing compared to Carlsbad Caverns even though Jewel cave is much larger. I was looking forward to doing some of the trails but roof trail was mostly closed due to construction and the canyon trail did not seem to take you into canyons although we did not do the whole trail. We did part of the Hell's Canyon trail but it was an obstacle course of cow poop. Why are there cows grazing on national forest land?

As a family, we have venture several caves and caverns, but Jewel Cave was a nice surprise. The tram ride was a bonus and the guide was very informative. The caverns were well preserved allowing the public take its beauty. Well worth the stop on our travels.

My spouse and I love caving so we were excited to take the Lantern Tour which was described as physically challenging. We chose to walk the mile from the Visitor's Center to the old cave opening. We had an informative pre-tour talk by a volunteer. Our young guide was engaging. The day of our tour, the elevator for the main tours was down, so only the Lantern Tour was available so some people in our group were unprepared for the physical challenge. We climbed down a narrow staircase and into a large chamber and there the tour ended. The guide explained that the tour used to continue. She showed us an almost vertical staircase and explained that the challenging staircase was the reason they ended the tour early now. We were tremendously disappointed. We had read and understood the physical requirements of the tour and felt penalized by others who apparently fail to appreciate the clear description of the physical demands of the tour. I hope that the center will once again allow visitors to enjoy the unique challenges of the Lantern Tour.

Call and check for tour times as we just missed a tour and had to wait three hours. Really "cool" cave ~ 49 degrees, but it is lit up like rooms. I'm claustrophobic, but I was okay except for the short (not short enough) time they cut the lights.

This cave is one of the must places to visit if you are in the Custer, SD or Keystone SD area and enjoy a walk through a very nice cave. The tour we were on was 1 1/2 hours but took almost 2 hours. The Ranger was very informative. Cave is a constant temp so good in summer as well as Spring and Fall.
