Owner description: Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource. As part of the National Park Service, the Monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the late winter and early spring seasons, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance. NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2017. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

During the winter months the rangers only offer two types of tours. There is a brief 20 minute tour offered at 9:05, 12:45 and 3:45. We took the hour and twenty minute scenic tour which is offered at 10 and 2 costing $8. I would call a head and confirm the tour times. The rangers were all very nice. Our guide was Kate who was very interesting and really knew all about the cave. This tour does have a lot of stairs but it's not strenuous. Since we were there in December, we were the only ones on the tour. I really like visiting National Parks during the winter months. They are less crowded and the rangers are more laid back without large crowds to deal with. Being winter, the 49 degrees in the cave was about the same temperature as outside. If you are visiting during the summer you may want to bring along a light jacket.

This is an awesome place to check out. The tour guides are very informative and friendly. The cost is minimal for the tours and well worth it. Do not wear shorts or tank tops because it is cool down there. Also, wear good walking shoes and preferably closed toe.

When we arrived at Jewel Cave there was only the $5.00 tour available. Yes you get to go inside the cave but only to a platform to listen to the ranger's speech. Taking the longer tour would be much more informative and fun. Call ahead to make sure that there are available tours as it is quite a drive to get there.

We've been on several cave tours in both Colorado and Utah. Jewel Cave was very impressive. Quite expansive and really amazing to see how large it is. Our tour guide, Shannon, was great. The kids also enjoyed the junior ranger program.

We made a swing through SD, WY, MT, and ND this summer and visited 9 national parks/monuments. The kids (and I) love the junior park ranger program. We just got our badges in the mail the other day. They were out when we were there and sure enough, they sent them to us. Thanks! The cave is great, we have a 2 1/2 year-old so were only able to do the 20 minute tour, but it left us wanting more. We'll be back!
