Owner description: Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource. As part of the National Park Service, the Monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the late winter and early spring seasons, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance. NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2017. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

“Scenic Tour is a Good Value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

At only $8 an adult, this was a great tour. We went Oct 3rd and there was only 8 of us on the tour, we did not have to call ahead for reservations. With a small tour group we were able to go slower and learn more about the cave. Our tour guide, Melissa, was fun and knew her stuff. She tried to get everyone involved in the tour. The views in the cave are absolutely breathtaking.

This tour would be good for all ages and abilities, the only hard part of the tour is there is 750ish stairs to climb which may be a problem for some.

“Reserve your tickets”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

We went in September and we thought we would not have to reserve tickets but we did any way. We got there over 30 minutes early and there was tickets available but it soon filled up. I thought it wouldn't be a long tour but it lasted around 2 hours. My husband and I enjoyed it and if you like caves this is a bargain to see.

“Jewel Cave is beautiful!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012

We took the scenic tour at Jewel Cave. It is truly beautiful!! Our tour guide was Ranger Kate and she really really good. There is a spot where they turn off the lights to show how dark it really is in the cave. She explained what she was going to do so people weren't taken by surprise. She saw that our 6 year old son looked a little nervous about it, so she asked him if he would like to help by flipping the switch, which he did. We thought it was really sweet of her to notice and get him involved.

Our son also did the Junior Ranger program. It involved going on the tour and then answering some questions in a booklet. The answers could be found by looking at the various displays in and around the visitors center. The he got "sworn in" by Ranger Kate and received his badge. Very cute!

“Still a fun and fascinating tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012 via mobile

Went on what must have been the Lantern tour in 1964 with my parents and reveled in it and the teenaged joy of seeing my father have to push my mother up a ladder. In 2012 we took our 20+ daughter on the Scenic Tour and despite the more than 700 steps (more going down than heading up) she did not get to see her mother struggle. It was great. Our Ranger tour guide (Melissa?) was fun and enthusiastic and informative. We had tried to get reservations - highly recommended- but had trouble with cell phone reception. We got the last three slots on the 10 AM tour upon walking in. Don't risk not getting on a tour and call ahead.

“Well worth the time!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

This tour is amazing! The cave is very large and I'm sure we saw only a tiny portion of it. There were numerous "rooms" we walked through with many different types of rock formations. It was quite a bit of walking, but really impressive. As others have said, you get lots of stops, so it doesn't seem like too much. The ranger who led our tour was friendly, kind of funny and knew everything about the cave and its history.
