Owner description: Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource. As part of the National Park Service, the Monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the late winter and early spring seasons, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance. NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2017. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

OK. We're jaded. We are from California, where you can go caving and exploring, but wow. Nothing prepared us for understanding the magnitude of a the original exploratory couple's curiosity. (What a 'hobby') Thank goodness for electic lighitng. How in the world would anyone make it through this environment and not be scared to death otherwise! We took the "Scenic Tour" and it was perfect. Yes, many stairs. No not too physical, but you should consider if you are really out of shape. Thought I'd be claustrophobic, or my knees wouldn't hold out (a bit arthritec) but all was good. The tour guide took his time, the goup of people provided a sense of commoraderie and support ("you can do it! only 70 more steps to go!") and there were plenty of rest stops to catch your breath. It was cool, but not cold, so don't overdress. Just "layer". The kids did fine (11, 14, 1nd 17) and the scenery was incredible. Be sure to ask lots of questions, the guides are happy to answer them all. It was an amazing very different viewpoint of our Earth.

We did the lantern cave tour. It was amazing. Everyone, young and old, in our group enjoyed it. Not a good idea if you are severely claustrophobic. I am a little bit claustrophobic but was able to get through it and enjoy the tour.

The 2 hour tour is worth it but not the 30 minute tour because the 30 minutes only takes you into a small room. If you can climb stairs and walk a mile do the 2 hours tour. You will need a reservation.

In my opinion this is the best cave to visit in the Black Hills. Beautiful formations!
