Took a bit for any of the wildlife to appear, but we did see buffalo, antelope, donkeys, buzzards, mules, prairie dogs, etc. I would suggest going early in the morning or early evening when the temperatures are cooler.
It was upsetting to see people getting out of their cars and walking up to the animals. These creatures are wild and there are signs everywhere to not approach these animals. Guess some people need to learn how to read.

We began by seeing prairie dog town, fun to watch in the wild. The kids could have watched them all day. The next animals we saw were the burros, very tame and fun to photograph. We the had some elk cross in front of us on the road. Finally what we all were waiting for, the bison were fun to watch as they created quit the traffic jam in the road.

We really enjoyed our drive on Wildlife Loop Road. When we drove through, early afternoon, we saw several herds of Buffalo. They were on the move, and crossing the road, so got a very close look at them! We also stopped to see the donkeys, one with a new baby. The landscape is hilly and beautiful, with very little traffic, at least the day we were there. The Wildlife Loop only takes about an hour of leisurely driving. You can get out at some spots, but can be just a nice drive.

My favorite part of our visit to Custer State Park was visiting the Buffalo herd the last morning on our drive out. How amazing to be that close to a herd of bison. It was a special moment I will forever remember and one my boys will never forget too. The visitor center knew right where they were. We had to take a side road off the Loop. So be sure to ask them where the buffalo are today.
