Custer State Park is just outside the town of Custer, SD. It is about ~6Miles outside the town. The Wildlife loop is approximately 20 Miles around the park. It took me about 3 hours to drive the full loop with stops on the way to view the wildlife. I did the drive around noon time and I mostly saw the Burros, Pronghorns, Bighorns & Bison. Actually I did not find any Bison inside the park around the afternoon, but I did find them when I continued on the Needles Highway after the wildlife loop! Burros are fun to be around, they kind of follow anybody who feeds them and I am sure the kids will get a kick out of it.

Wildlife loop is definitely a beautiful drive with varied landscape and with beautiful spots for pictures.

Stayed here over 4th of July in the State Game Lodge. Our only complaint is we could not stay longer. Great trails in the park, tons of wildlife, fantastic scenery. Don't miss the park if you are in the Black Hills.

We only had a day and a half to cover Custer, Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Devil's Tower so we had a rush sampling of the park. Our first loop was the Wildlife Loop and we saw herds of buffalo, the begging burrows and a prairie dog town. Wonderful scenery!! The other loops, including Needle's Highway, we basically had a sampling - we drove through the tunnels which was fun and around the loop highways. I don't remember as much about those loops but we had a lot of area to cover in a little time.

We stayed in Custer State Park in a Bluebell Lodge Cabin for two nights in June. We LOVED the park with the beautiful scenic drives and varied wildlife. We fed the wild burros carrots, and saw herds of buffalo, lots of deer and antelope. We were disappointed however with our cabin. It was very basic yet we paid $235 a night. There was a kitchen but not a single dish or utensil. We were in cabin 14 which was older and not nearly as charming as the newer log cabins. Yes we did know this ahead of time but at least expected the cabin to be a step above typical state park cabins for that price. For just a small amount of money the park could upgrade the cabins and make these cabins worth the price. We would not stay there again.
