“The 80% Solution - A Little Pricey but Suitable Option”
Reviewed February 15, 2009

Just outside of Volcan, Dos Rios occupies a beautiful property with a small grassy courtyard and gurgling streams (probably 2 – hence: dos rios – but I didn’t count). Our large -at the end of the corridor - second floor room featured a small balcony with chairs and nice views and a large bathroom with 2 bathrobes.

Although comfortable and suitable, there were a few detracting details. The sliding doors to the balcony were top hung leaving a nice gap of about a 1/2 inch at the bottom. For an unheated room, our windy night provided some unasked for chlly ventilation. And a warmer night might bring the bugs in. $2 for a windstrip would've fixed this. A stocked convenience bar was unnecessarily lit by a really bright fluorescent. Even though it was inside an armoire, the light penetrating through the ventilation slats required a towel to be thrown over it to dim the room. Unnecessarily annoying. Internet connection in the lobby on the house computer was $1.25/hour but the internet connection (or the computer) was so feeble as to make the effort almost worthless. It seems like these small details would be so easy to fix if one just cared enough to do so or made it a priority. Our group considered this the 80% solution because they did so much right and just failed to deal with some of the nettlesome details. It wouldn't keep me away, but then, for the price, I expected this small stuff to be resolved.

There is an onsite restaurant, but the proximity to the town of Volcan with restaurants like Italian Il Forno (run by Joe from NY formerly owner of the “Emerald Kettle” in Seattle) or the Greek Acropolis on an easy-to-navigate-in-the-dark road(by car – a bit of a trek if walking) made this option unnecessary.

For what it was and where it was Dos Rios was a little pricey but a suitable option. Just be prepared to deal with the 20% they missed.

  • Liked — Really nice & roomy room. Very attractive room, grounds, overall

Volcan and the surrounding area were blessed by nature, in the soil, the wildlife and the plant life. Accommodations there are simple, so before you go you need to decide whether you think quaint is good.

Hotel Dos Rios is as good a place to stay as the area offers. The grounds are picturesque and the staff is most helpful (moreso if you speak Spanish). The rooms are spaceous, but simple. No phone or TV. Housekeeping is not what you expect in the States, but the rooms are basically clean.

The structure is wooden, so there can be a lot of noise when people are moving around or talking. Take a second floor room if one is available.

Before we got there something had killed all the butterflies in their butterfly garden, so inquire in advance if that is an issue to you. At least it had not affected the numerous birds that come there.

  • Liked — The grounds and surrounding area.
  • Disliked — Noise from neighborhood dogs and people walking and talking.

This was our second trip to the highlands of Panama and this year we stayed in
Volcan and explored the surrounding environs.
We had rented a private cabin in Volcan but unfortunately there were some
circumstances which caused us to seek other accommodations.
We discovered the Hotel Dos Rios on the outskirts of town and after lunch there
we looked at a suite and decided to check in. The staff are honest, warm and
wonderful people and they do everything that they can to make your stay an
enjoyable one. The two suites that this hotel offers are at the end of the
building and overlook a small stream, some beautiful forest and the Mariposaria
(butterfly house). For a very small fee our friend and guide
"Edwards" showed us the different varieties of butterflies including
the beautiful Mariposa Transparente. Edwards is a friendly and knowledgeable
gentleman who really enjoys his work at the Dos Rios, and you will enjoy meeting
him. The hotel itself is a semi "V" shaped building with the
"Barriles" nightclub to the far left, an outdoor dining area (with the
river running under it), the main indoor dining area and then the lobby. The
right leg of the semi "V" comprises the hotel rooms with two floors
and the two suites at the end. The hotel rooms are relatively spacious and
comfortable but the suites we stayed in were much more-so. The food was very
good and plentiful and the entire staff of cooks, servers and greeters were
anxious to assure that you had a good dining experience. The hotel is located
in a quiet area slightly outside of town on the road to Rio Sereno which makes
it convenient to Volcan and outlying pueblos such as Bambito and Cerro Punta.
My wife and I really enjoyed interacting with ALL the staff at this hotel, they
were very helpful and always wore genuine smiles.
We love the Country and the People of Panama and would recommend the Dos Rios as
a nice place to stay if you want to enjoy both during your visit the the
Chiriqui highlands of Panama.
