I also was part of the Habitat for Humanity build group that stayed here. I too have to say I enjoyed the place immensely. Not only was it a very relaxing place to unwind with the beautiful lake and wonderful trees, but the owners (Hugo and his family) took very good care of us and made us the most wonderful food. By allowing the native trees to return to his land over the past 30 years Hugo has recreated a habitat for the native animals and it is quite something to be enveloped by the canopy of trees and the animals (monkeys etc,)that inhabit it. It is commendable that by conserving native habitat Hugo has made this wonderful "Hotel ecological" which is another reason to support this hotel (if you weren't won over by the service and food). Why stay in el estor ? The Lake is beautiful, and also in about a 15 minutes drive (we organised a van) from this hotel is a hotspring waterfall cascading into an ice cold stream that is well worth experienceing. Also El Estor is only an (easy) hour drive from Rio Dulce where we took a boat tour down the river to Livingston. I thought it much better to avoid the hustle and bustle of the town of Rio Dulce and stay at the Hotel Ecologico Cabanas del Lago.

Our Habitat for Humanity group stayed here during our build from June 5-15, 2011. Hugo and his family were the most amazing hosts, making us feel completely at home. The setting is beautiful, in the jungle with monkeys, iguanas, chickens, geese and their pet dog and kittens. The rooms were large and kept impeccably clean. The meals were huge and very tasty - everything from shrimp to steak to local fish. Everyone enjoyed swimming in the lake after a hot day working and there was plenty of room to relax with great views of the lake.

I stayed here for 3 nights with my partner in an extremely spacious room with 3 double beds! The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable- i had one of the best nights sleep here since i have been away travelling for 9 months. The bungalows are set in a lakeside location with a private beach from where you can swim in the lake. The views are magnificent, especially at sunset. There are also monkeys, birds and other wildlife around the site.
The owner Hugo is a very warm, hospitable and friendly man who is keen to make sure that his guests are happy. He even picks you up from town when you arrive.
In the evenings his equally lovely wife cooked us delicious pork chops with vegetables and they make the best fruit liquardos in Guatemala!
We arrived here from staying at Finca Tatin near Livingston, but this place was miles better. I cannot recommend this place enough- you have to visit them, i just wish we could have stayed longer!
