“Don't miss Denny's!”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

We made Denny's Beach our weekend stopover, between Punta Gorda, Belize and our flight out from Guatemala City. It has rustic charm and a beautiful setting, good food and friendly staff,
Denny chief among them!

The sand beach is lovely, and the swimming and kayaking were the perfect way to rest up for the trip home.

Room Tip: The cabanas are worth the extra cost, as they are right on the lake.

We loved staying at Denny's, it was tranquil and the beach setting superbly relaxing. Denny himself is a genuine character and he takes pride in being a great host. However, price-quality wise, the place is starting to look a bit frayed around the edges. It is a little pricy for what you get, but then again, it's the only place of it's kind.

Try the tapado!!!!

Room Tip: the bungalows in the big house are not very private...

Just spent 3 nights at Denny's Beach with friends. It is a beautiful setting on the lake and a nice place to get away from it all. We were there for New Years and had a fun night although it was pretty quiet when we were there. Went horse riding through Denny's for only Q100 for four hours, by far the cheapest we have seen horseriding in the last 3 months of travelling. The food was great and Restaurant staff helpful, food was not as expensive as I had been prepared for it to be. The room was in great condition with A/C and a clean bathroom with lovely hot shower - not something you can rely on in general in Guatemala! Denny is a character and great to talk to. Go to Denny's beach if you want to enjoy being somewhere beautiful and secluded and off the backpacker trail.

This place is nice & quiet. Lovely located at Lago Izabal. With nice nature walks through the lush forest, a meditation spot on the hilltop and a hammock over the water to enjoy lake views. I was here in 2008 on my own and other travellers had just left. But it was interesting to talk to Denny, who is an authentic character. My room (in the main building) was basic but clean.

This place is incredible, Dennys is very friendly and keen for you to stay (would advise you make it clear how long you intend to stay for before you arrive), but the service, setting and standards were unbelievable. One of the top places I sayed in my 3 months travelling Central America. Definitey great for couples.

Went to Denny's for a weekend trip to relaxation, and i was not disappointed. It was easy getting to Mariscos (we got off at the junction, found a bus waiting and took off immediately), called Denny to say we had arrived, where we only waited 10min for the boat to pick us up. Arriving, i could feel my stresses leaving instantly, as i settled into my hammock on the end of the dock. The rest of the weekend was filled with reading, swimming (a little waterskiing and horseriding) and eating delicious seafood. Our room was clean, comfortable (with an AC) and a private bathroom, with a fantastic view overlooking the beach. Being on this side of the lake, the sunsets are simply spectacular, and add a yummy pina colada and sitting in the warm lake, it was perfect. Due to the isolation, it was very safe and peaceful- we had the place to ourselves, no other tourists- so it is a place to really get away from it all and not be hassled (by people or by bugs). The service was great and really helpful. My friends and i are for sure going back for another weekend- Thanks Denny

Booked the ‘Villa suite one’ minus the kitchen, directly from Denny for three nights in order to see the Quirigula Mayan site and the Rio Dulce area on my way from Honduras. Got a good deal from Denny and loved the place the moment I set eyes on it. It has a real nice laid back atmosphere, but may not appeal to your typical ‘Resort’ tourist who likes to be catered to. One should also keep in mind that access to and from Denny’s is by lancha from Rio Dulce or Mariscos and doesn’t always happen when one wishes.

Whoever built the cottages, and I am assuming it was Denny, put a lot of effort into them, as everything was chosen with great care, from the tiles in the bathroom to the wood furniture. I found myself walking around the room admiring and touching everything upon arrival. The view of Lake Izabal from the room and the entire property was wonderful; the water was clear and inviting.

The small outdoor restaurant and bar had a limited menu, but everything from the cooked breakfast to the hamburgers was very good and reasonably priced.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. When I had a minor plumbing problem, it was cheerfully fixed as soon as I mentioned it. I should also note, that the staff was very helpful in assisting and making arrangements for me to continue my travels.

Anyone who travels knows that things do not always go as planned, and I regretfully had to leave one day early. If I am ever lucky enough to be in the area again, I will certainly stay at Denny’s and hopefully see the Quirigula site that I missed on this first occasion.
