La Casa De Don David
Ranked #1 of 12 El Remate B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 10, 2010

We stayed at Casa de Don David for 4 days and nights end of May/first of June 2010 and really enjoyed it. I recommend it for those who want several days in the Tikal area. The helpful staff are English-speaking and very helpful. The setting is on the edge of Lake Peten in the village of El Remate. There are a few small restaurants and a few places to get souvenirs and local fare. The closest ATM is a 20 or 30-minute bus ride away. Casa can arrange transportation to and from the ruins, bus or private tours, airport and other transfers. Their restaurant serves good, no-frills, basic choices in an open-air facility . We were quite overwhelmed by the heat and humidity so the A/C in our room was quite soothing. They provide water bottles and free purified refills, and promote conservation. They have free internet service.

It is pretty far from ATMs, banks, shops, markets of any kind of civilisation (a few neighboring houses and small "cocinas"), but the scenery is worth it. there are local buses to take in and out of Flores regularly, and the locals are friendly. Great place to stay if you're in to visit Tikal. The Sunrise tour on Temple IV is a must. You'll regret beeing that close and not taking it.

The service is good, very clean rooms, prices are ok, the food is good. You can pick from souvenirs in the lobby, and make reservations for different kinds of trips or transport at the reception. They accept MasterCard, my Visa didn't work. I've found only ONE bank in Santa Elena (so not close) to accept my Visa, which had a limit for daily withdrawals of 200 Quetzales :(. Pack mastercards or cash.

The purpose of the Guatemala leg of our trip was to visit majestic Tikal, so we never planned on staying too many nights in the Peten, two was just enough and the experience at the park was brilliant.

We chose to stay at Don David's due to the location in El Remate, being so close to Tikal made it the perfect base for exploration, even if things were a little too quiet for our liking. Our room was spotlessly clean and the 'warm' shower did the job, sleeping was a breeze as we couldn't hear a thing once we settled in.

The hotel itself is a great place, a dozen or so rooms situated on a grassy allotment with mature trees and plenty of bird life, gecko's climbing along the walls outside at night. The two dogs are also great company even if a little bit cheeky! The restaurant offers magnifcent views accross the grounds and over the clear lake, where you can see horses and pigs roaming about, all making El Remate a charming rural Guatemalan experience.

The food at the restaurant was decent, nothing to write home about though, the fajitas were probably the pick of the bunch.

El remate is quiet, remote, and did I mention quiet? The location makes it ideal to head off to Tikal, but otherwise you should pack a book to pass the time as exploring the lake and town can be done within a few hours more or less, although there are some horse riding excursions we didn't get to do which looked like a good option.

We were very satisfied with our stay. The food and the rooms were good. We felt secure and the side trips they arranged for us went well. It is interesting to walk around the tiny village and the lake and explore. You have to walk a bit to access the lake.

We choose this hotel because of the recomendations on this site and because they offered family rooms with a separate bedroom for the kids. Great value and a very nice place.

Really enjoyed our stay at La Casa Don David. We chose the place because it is the most convenient hotel to Tikal, but it is far and away the best hotel we stayed in in Central America. The lake that the hotel is situated on-- I forget the name-- has crystal clear waters that we swam in (and I'm not a huge swimmer in lakes in the US). The cool breezes are nice at night, and the views in the morning (from a hammock in the courtyard or in the gazebo) are spectacular.
My favorite part, however, was the food. The extremely friendly staff served a great menu well, and also enjoyed experimenting in making things for us that weren't on the menu, such banana milkshakes and a strawberry daiquiris.
Whatever type of accommodations you are accustomed to, the clean, air-conditioned, simple elegance of La Casa Don David will put you at ease and allow you to relax and enjoy this beautiful part of the world.

Wow, what a great place. The food especially. Fresh just-picked bananas from David's trees, tea made from allspice, also grown just outside, you can see it from the dining room. Very clean rooms, and close to Tikal. David's tour of the wildlife around the hotel is great. He and his family are so welcoming and friendly.
