La Casa De Don David
Ranked #1 of 12 El Remate B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 10, 2013

La Casa de Don David is a charming base from which we explored the parks at Tikal and Yaxha. My sister and I and another friend stayed there in January 2011 and we knew we would return one day. In March of this year my sister and I were most delighted to be able to show my husband what a little gem it is. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The grounds are lovely. We were very fortunate to have the owner, David, spend some time with us telling us about the plants in his extensive garden, which is graced by the focal point of a huge ceiba tree. The light display at night is beautiful, and on our first evening there we were lucky to enjoy the sight of bonfires on the grounds as an added attraction. La Casa de Don David is excellent value, you have the choice of having breakfast or your evening meal included in the very affordable price of your room. The food is delicious and Rosie's mixed drinks are legendary. Kelsey, Yohana and other staff members are most attentive, they arranged our transport to and from the airport and were very helpful with suggestions for knowledgeable guides for the attractions in the area.
After a busy day out, it was delightful to sit on the new elevated observation deck to enjoy the lake view. We did this during the day and also at night, a most pleasant experience. The Toucan Express zip line on the deck is available to serve drinks as required. What more could a body desire? I would not hesitate to recommend la Casa de Don David as a most peaceful and relaxing place to stay when visiting this area. You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We had rooms 12 and 13, they were perfect for us with lovely views of the grounds and the lake.

This place was amazing. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly and helpful, the grounds were beautiful and everyone should experience the Toucan Express. And the price can not be beat. I will be going back.

Great price! Great place! Very clean rooms and the grounds are beautiful too. There is a deck that overlooks the lake that you can order drinks from. They come on the Toucan express that is a zipline from the restaurant. The food was excellent. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. It was like staying at a resort at hostel prices.

Room Tip: get to bed early because the nearby roosters wake up early : )

Stayed here for two nights in April--a free meal each day, walking distance from a few other great restaurants, and a good starting off point for visiting Tikal. The service was excellent and the "Toucan Express" made ordering beers from the overlook quirky and easy. Lucas the dog was also a charming mascot!

We stayed in Casa de Don David for two nights, it was great, the service was excellent, every one was super helpful! It's great that you get one meal either breakfast or dinner included. The desserts especially the chocolate cheese cake or lemon cheese cake are awesome!
It's a very quiet place, relaxing. We didn't spend that much time in the hotel, since we were out and about in Tikal or Yaxha getting to know the archaeological sites.
The hotel offers great tours, horse back rides to a near by lake, and if you ask they offer great info on guides to Tikal (if you know spanish, we got a GREAT tour guide, he knows EVERYTHING there is to know, his name is Isreal, ask for him at the counter, but only spanish tours)
We first had a normal room and the second night moved to the more expensive ones, and not that big of a difference really, they were both good rooms, the only diff. was that one had a hammock and a chair in the porch of the room.
If you're going to Peten, no point in staying in the hotel the whole time, go out and enjoy the sites and the things to see and do!

Room Tip: If you're looking to save some money, don't buy the ticket back to Flores with them, it'...

My boyfriend and I traveled to Guatemala in Feb. 2013 for 2 nights. We stayed Casa de Don David because a friend recommended it. It was a great stay, but my favorite part was the food at the restaurant. The price is right and you get a free meal each day you stay. I ate the spiced chicken and the meat loaf. Both meals were excellent and the staff was great. I had the fried plantains with ice cream for dessert each night too. Sooo good. The room we stayed in was simple, but it was everything we needed for our two night stay. The room was big, the beds were pretty comfortable, and the shower had plenty of hot water. I loved that there was a tray on a zipline that would bring drinks out to the patio over looking the lake. The Mayan garden was beautiful. The location was only 20-30 minutes from Tikal. I thought the hotel's arrangements to get to Tikal were reasonable. I would definitely go back.

There is a Maya Garden paradise at the end of Lago Petén Itzá in the village of El Remate. La Casa de Don David (http://www.lacasadedondavid.com) is more than a convenient lodging for guided tours to Tikal. It is a respite from tourism itself. Learn about Maya culture and local flora while enjoying a cool drink delivered to you on the sunset viewing deck by the Tucan Express. Room rates include one meal (breakfast or dinner - vegetarian option).Guided tours are small, private arrangements with an excellent, knowledgeable guide. (We had Samuel, who is a birder and takes you off the Tikal causeways into more hidden places of the park.) If more people join your group, the cost is shared and reduces the per person rate. Lodging and food are excellent. Truly a Trip Advisor award winner.
