I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff are at Casa De Don David. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but nothing special. What makes this family run hotel a wonderful place to stay is their SERVICE. They bent over backwards to accomodate the gluten intolerant members of our family at meals. They helped us find a great guide to Tikal and Yaxha (ask for Samuel if you can, he was extremely knowledgeable and put up with two academics plying him with every manner of question). The hotel is safe, the lake beautiful for swimming and the location perfect for easy access to either Tikal or Yaxha. Our teenagers were very happy there. I would stay here again and would recommend it to family and friends.

I recently stayed at Casa De Don David Jan 6th - 9th 2013.
I was traveling with my mom and my boyfriend and Casa De Don David was a great place to stay.
We originally booked two rooms, but once we arrived we realized that one room with two separate sleeping areas would suite us best. They were very accommodating and reimbursed us the difference. They were very helpful in assisting us with additional travel plans and they booked us the best guide for the Tikal sunrise tour - Samuel !! The accommodations were great and the beds were comfy. They have a Toucan Express (it delivers your drinks from the bar to the sun deck) its worth going just for that! Their Garden is beautiful and they have a gazebo just for the hammocks, a lovely place to relax after a long day touring Tikal. This place is so chill they have a dog with dreadlocks, I mean really, when have you ever seen a dog with dreads!
Casa De Don David is the best place to stay in El Remate, I wouldn't bother looking anywhere else!!

Room Tip: The rooms under the restaurant are a bit noiser then the others. The restaurant closes at 10pm and o...

La Casa De Don David is a nice hotel that caters well to both budget and vacation travelers. The staff are very accommodating and went out of their way to ensure we had a reputable guide despite us arriving late the night before. They did it without huffing or complaining and the result was we had a really special experience at the ruins which are absolutely amazing.
The grounds are large and a tad different in that there's a Mayan World reconstruction around a beautiful Ceiba tree which is lit up at night. It's possible to sit up at the end of garden with a view of the lake and have drinks delivered by a high-wire cart from the kitchen. Kitsch and unique but kind of nice.
The triple room we had was fine. Beds were reasonably comfortable and the place was spotless. The bathroom as well was very clean and showers reliably hot. We found the restaurant a little hit and miss but otherwise dependable and a nice place to sit for drinks.
Overall a very relaxing place. Make sure you walk up along the lake to enjoy some of the public bathing areas, it really is a beautiful place.

Pros:
- the hotel is safe with a night watchman;
- the rooms are clean;
- excellent service and staff;
- the restaurant has an amazing view;
- the deck, which overlooks the lake, has great service;
- receptionist very helpful with organising tours and onward travel plans.

Cons:
- the rooms need a facelift (given the rates);
- much effort was put into the dinner menu and its preparation, but the taste was average (and thus slightly overpriced). However, lunch and breakfast was great.

Bad planning on our part meant we needed to travel from Lanquin to El Remate on the evening of Christmas Eve. We thought it impossible, but Don David's wonderful family managed to sort it out for us. We arrived very late that evening and they'd even prepared dinner for us, ready for our arrival! Awakening the next morning to the sound of so many different birds, was wonderful. Don David has a beautiful garden overlooking Lake Peten Itza. The various rooms / lodges are all set around the garden. The rooms are great - very clean with fans. Breakfast is served each morning in the restaurant which overlooks the garden, with views of the lake. Breakfast or dinner is included in the price of a night's stay, which makes it great value. Don David, his wife Rosita and daughter Kelsey were all very friendly and could not have been more helpful. We didn't have the time to visit Flores, but if you're planning to visit the area and head to Tikal, would definitely recommend staying in El Remate. It's a lovely, peaceful place on the shores of Lake Peten Itza, a gorgeous, fresh water lake where you can swim.

My fiance and i stayed here on a trip to the Mayan Ruins in Tikal. The hotel staff was very welcoming and extremely helpful. The food at the hotel was delicious. I am a vegetarian and they served a vegeterain option with every meal. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is staying in the area. Room was clean, grounds were well kept and we couldn't have asked for more. Make sure to go out on the patio and order a drink delivered via the Tucan Express!!

We stayed at Don David with 4 children (10-14 yr) in January 2012. We found the hospitality and service exceeding all our expectations. The hosts (Don, Rosita and Kelsey) were kind, interested, cordial and always striving to ensure our stay was the best. We took a night away to stay at Jungle Lodge within Tikal Park and wished we'd just day tripped from Don David. The food is well prepared and served in a beautiful open air dining room with sunset views of the lake. One additional tip -- if you are a runner, the route along the lake past the nature reserve is quiet, mostly unpaved and partially shaded. Don helped our children with a school project, talked with them about his early experiences in Petan and won their hearts with a small gift when we left.
