“Nice Jungle Walk”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

It was a good walk, lots of green and occasionally monkeys. It's not as jungly as Tikal but it makes for a nice day out.

“Just an average hike”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

It is a nice but not remarkable nature reserve, with multiple lookout points over the Lake Peten Itza. The trail goes up, and then once you reach certain point, you go downhill. Not much walking on a flat terrain. Biotopo opens at 6:30 am, ticket costs 40Q for self-guided tour, and about US 50$ for a guided tour. The earlier you go the better chance you have to spot any wildlife, but even then don’t expect too much. Biotopo is not a very secluded place and it does not appear to be an old-growth type of the forest, (suitable habitat for different species of animals) due to lack of more large and standing dead trees, multi-layered canopies with gaps, and other signs indicating old age of the forest. We saw a couple of Blue Morpho butterflies, few species of birds, heard howler monkeys, and saw a few of them as well.

If your heart is set on viewing wildlife, and learning about fauna and flora, combine that with guided tours to more remote places like El Mirador, Nakum , Yaxha or even heavily visited Tikal. We saw much more in the last two without trying. It’s a 2 for 1 deal because you will also learn about the ruins.

Biotopo was not a wasted time but you can definitely skip it, and not miss anything.

“My walk in the jungle”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

it was a beautiful walk in the jungle to a fantastic view of Lake Peten Itza. After coming down the trail and longing for the lake that i had just seen from the top of the hill....I jumped in off the little dock in front of the visitor center and had a fabulous cool down swim! it couldn't have been better! Later on after my shower i went walking and spotted a hot air balloon and went up for a sunset ride..perfection!

“A walk in the woods”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

A lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Great views over Lake Peten Itza from the top. Would have hoped to have seen more birds / animals, but was a very lovely walk nonetheless through the reserve.
