Flores may be the most popular town for Tikal-goers, but El Remate's Hotel Mon Ami offers a compelling and much more tranquilo alternative. While there's not much happening around town, this hotel had beautiful and clean rooms and a great dock and swimming area. The staff was very nice and helpful, while the food was better than I expected. Of course, the price made this hotel an even easier decision- great value.

My husband and I only spent one night at Mon Ami, and it was definitely hard to leave. The hotel is right on the lake with a great little dock to swim off of. The simple room and bathroom were quite big and had a fantastic porch with a giant hammock. Given the price, this place was a steal. It's a bit of a walk from the main area of El Remate (which is quite small as it is), but the hotel has great food to make up for it. It was very easy to get to and from Tikal on the mini buses.

My husband, 3 girlfriends and I stayed here in February in a 5 person room. The room was great and seemed clean and we had our own bathroom. We picked this place because it was a good base to see Tikal, but it ended up being not only that but also a great place to relax and enjoy! Mon Ami has a really fun central area with picnic tables and wi-fi as well as a restaurant that had decent food. This hostel also has a dock across the street that stretches out over a BEAUTIFUL clear blue lake that is perfect for swimming and cooling off. The dock also has hammocks that are perfect to relax in after a long day at Tikal.

The trip to Tikal was easy to set up through Mon Ami and the bus was on time and got us to Tial nice and early so that we had plenty of time to explore. Santiago Billy drove us back to the border and was very knowledgable about the area and very friendly! We would come back to El Remate and stay at Mon Ami again for sure!

We stayed here after hiking to exhaustion at Tikal. The central area has a fun traveler vibe with good food, great drinks and fast WiFi. Our simple bungalow was quiet and secluded amidst nice garden with an extremely comfy bed and hot water. Awesome value for sure!

Like many, I ended up in El Remate planning to make a trip to Tikal and leave straight after, however, after 1 day I fell in love with this place (and ended up staying here until I left Guatemala, trusting that there can only be a couple of places in this country that offer such beauty).
Within 2 days, I got totally enchanted by a deep tranquility that rules this region. The lake is beautiful... Still, clear, turquoise... changing constantly with the breeze and light.
Having traveled a fair bit in my time, I feel that MON AMI offered me one of the best accommodation services I have experienced.
Great vibe, excellent location, fantastic food/service, amazing people owning and running the project.
I was in the dorm which is a very spacious, BEAUTIFUL palapa with a high ceiling, lots of light, the most comfortable bed I have had since being on the road (4.5 months in this stretch) and nice, wooden flooring. Very clean and hospitable. I felt so at home, which is a precious feeling when you travel a lot. The value is excellent in terms of both food and accommodation. Everything I needed was provided by Mon Ami which meant I could just be and enjoy the utter peace.

THANK YOU MON AMI (SANTIAGO BILLY AND THE TEAM) FOR AN TRULY UNFORGETTABLE STAY.

I COULDN'T RECOMMEND IT MORE.

GO HERE... and enjoy!!!

Maja

We just came to the area to see Tikal and just looked for a decent place to stay, but El Remate and Hotel Mon Ami became highlights of our Central America trip on their own.
El Remate is much closer to Tikal than Flores and it is also much more laid back. Also, the lake is beautiful over there, so clean and offers great swimming.
Hotel Mon Ami is run by Santiago Billy, a Frenchman and was one of the best atmosphere places we have stayed at in Guatemala and we have met some of the nicest people over there.
Definitely recommended.
