We came to El Ramate from Flores looking to stay somewhere a little closer to nature before moving on from the Peten region.

After viewing almost every room in town, we decided on Hotel Sun Breeze. The rooms are clean and newly painted/tiled with a private bathroom. The shower was not always hot but the climate means a cooler shower is often quite welcome here! Outside we had a small porch area with chairs and a table - perfect for eating breakfast/lunch.

The owner is friendly and helpful. He also runs a taxi service which meant he was able to take us to St Elena direct from our hotel at 4am to catch our bus to Palenque on our last day - a huge bonus!

We really enjoyed our stay in El Remate and Hotel Sun Breeze was the perfect base for a variety of activities on/near the lake - horse riding, canoeing, swimming and exploring the nature reserve. It is a well run, clean and reasonably priced place to stay - we would definitely return!

Room Tip: None of the rooms have a view of the lake and instead look out onto other rooms across the path. A w...

Hotel Sun Breeze has lost some of its former appeal, through no fault of its owners. The owner of the land between the Sun Breeze and the lake has built a monstrous structure of indeterminate purpose, and the Sun Breeze’s owners built a wall against the increased traffic. So instead of a gorgeous sunset view out the window, you get a brick wall. Also, the nearby pier, which used to be the happy scene of frolicking kids, now has a fat water pipe running down its length.

The Sun Breeze retains its convenient location at the junction of the road to Cerro Cahui, with shops and restaurants nearby. The rooms are down and behind the entrance, insulating them from street noise.

The rooms are clean and bright. I stayed in a large room with two double beds, screened windows on two walls, overhead fan, and a porch with table, chairs, and hammock (away from the brick wall). No hooks or hangers for clothes. Temperamental electric shower was usually cold. Because I stayed for five days, I paid Q60 (U$8) a night. A great deal in this tranquil and beautiful base for travel to Tikal, Yaxha, Belize, or Palenque.

we stayed here for 3 nights as a base to visit Tikal. We reserved by phone and were given a lovely room. It was very clean with mosquito nets on the windows. The location was perfect, in the middle of town, but the rooms are at the back so you dont get noise. It's 1 minute's walk from the lake. We were able to book Tikal transport and a Belize shuttle with them. They cleaned the room each day and the shower was powerful. A great relaxing place to visit Tikal!

Clean, secure, well located. Pleasant, airy rooms with private bathrooms and hammocks. Good budget option but do make sure you get a receipt if you pay in advance so you have evidence of payment and hotel taxi service is unreliable. Better to use collectivos or buses that pass regularly on main street.

My husband and I ended up in Guatemala as a last minute change of plans. We decided to stay in El Remate for visiting Tikal as Flores seemed too far away. We had a brief look around but settled here as it was extremely clean, the owners were friendly and it had a lake view.
The room was quite hot but had a fan. We did get a couple of ants in the room.
We had a private bathroom with lukewarm water. In Lonely Planet it states SunBreeze has shared bathrooms but this is not true. All rooms have private bathrooms. They do provide towels and soap.
The owners were a great source of information about the area and tours to Tikal. We ended up booking out tour to Tikal through the hotel as it actually worked out the same price as doing it yourself but it was all organised for you!
I would definately stay here again if I return.

We came across this budget 4 room hotel via owners referral. Though he obviously has a vested interest in renting out a room, he initially drove us (he's a taxi driver as well) to other hotels we were interested in checking out first. Upon seeing other hotels, we settled on Sun Breeze because the room available was clean, comfy, secure, private bath, fan and at a reasonable price.

The host proved to be very helpful in coordinating trips to the Tikal ruins and knowledge of the surrounding areas.

The hotel is located along the lake, away from the 'hustle & bustle' of town, in walking distance to several decent restaurants and along the main road (in case you need to catch bus to 'downtown'; Flores/Santa Elena ~20min)
