Beware of this place. Very disappointing. Booked a deluxe king room. Arrived to be given a room with a terrible quality queen. Demanded to be moved to a room with a king. Got a crap room that smells like bleach with a tiny window that won't open. Carpets dirty. Staff surly.

My friends and I have been New Orleans many times over the years, as our hometown is only about 2 hours away. We booked this hotel mainly because of the location. However, it was surprisingly quaint and offered everything we needed. First of all, the location of this hotel is unbeatable. It is right in the heart of the French Quarter. Our favorite spots were just steps from the hotel. It also had a bar and great restaurant for breakfast. They even have a great happy hour in the bar. There's a small grocery store just across the street that offers a pretty good selection of snacks, beer, and wine surprisingly, and the prices are great! The hotel and courtyard were beautiful. The french doors of the suites open out onto the courtyard which is wonderful this spring time of the year! The rooms have very high ceilings, and they were very clean and appealing. Although our room was right near the street, it was surprisingly quiet despite the hustle and bustle. The staff was also extremely friendly. We were upgraded to a junior suite for free, and our friends were upgraded from a junior to a regular courtyard suite for free as well. The hotel we previously stayed at cost nearly double the cost of this hotel, and it was not nearly as charming. We were very pleased with this hotel, especially for the price!

This was my first trip to "Nola" and it was fabulous! The Hotel St Marie is so charming, and the staff was amazing!

Jenn checked us in and showed us where our room was. She also gave us a map and made several recommendations as to places we should check out. They were all wonderful suggestions!

John Marshall and Dena also helped suggest spots to check out and were both amazing as well.

I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone, and I plan on staying there again on my next trip to New Orleans!! :-)

We stayed at Hotel St. Marie from March 20-24, 2013 in Suite 603

and we just loved this hotel. The room was

beautiful, spacious, and quiet with a nice large bathroom with fantastic

lighting (so appreciated when putting on makeup!) The refrigerator and

microwave was a great convenience. We felt like we were in our own private

house, removed from the main hotel.

The courtyard with the pool was so pretty and quiet. We sat out there

several times in the evening enjoying a glass of wine. And the adorable

little cafe, Vacherie, was so convenient to get a great cup of coffee and

treat in the morning to bring back to the room to enjoy while getting ready

to head out for the day.

The staff was courteous and friendly, always with a smile and greeting any

time of the day.

If we ever return to NOLA, we will without

hesitation stay at Hotel St. Marie again.

Hotel – great location across from Four Points Sheraton in the French Quarters. A street away from main street (Bourbon St) where the noise is, so nice and quiet. Only 5 floors, with small pool. Most rooms have balcony but fairly small. Only one lift so fairly slow. Kitchen closes at 10pm. Reception has coupons for dining and will recommend. Reception will book tours. Pool not heated.

Room – free wifi. Safe deposit box in room. Old torn and worn out carpets but room fairly large with 2 double beds. Bathroom very small with bathtub. Towels very small (even for me and I am not big). Americans are on the big side so towels are very small by normal standards. No fridge. Only coffee on room. Americans big on their coffee so no tea to be seen. No milk but creamer. There’s a small convenience store next door, left of hotel.

Café Vacherie serves reasonable sandwiches. I had a huge salmon and cream cheese bagel for $11. The turkey/bacon sandwich with fries for $9. Big serves. Good selection of healthy salads and vegetarian considering the American diet lacks this. Too much fried stuff and fries with everything and too big a portion.

Vicinity and attractions - Seafood gumbo, seafood platter, po-boys, pralines, biegnets, mint julep and daiquiris are popular, in fact any type of alcoholic drink is popular in New Orleans! Some were already drinking at breakfast time! Servings are huge. Tips are expected, usually 15-20% of bill, they even circle the calculations that are already given and printed on the receipt. Very popular places are Oceana, Deanies, Café du monde and Johnny’s po-boys. Queue early to get in. One evening we started queuing about 4.45pm and there were already plenty of people eating and ahead of us! We had a 45-60mins wait. Table ready for us just before 6pm. It’s like this at every other place – quite ridiculous. A great chicken shop on St Louis St just down from Bourbon St called old quarters in English, Spanish name unsure, sells yummy deep fried chicken wings or tenders, even po-boys. Great too because it is not crowded like the other places. Not much of a deco but fine by me in order to avoid the queues and crowd. Same name shop next door sells pizza. Next to the Jax Brewery there’s a café that sells biegnets that are bigger than the ones sold at café du monde – probably also cheaper. Paid $3 for a plate of 3 biegnets (square doughnuts dusted with icing sugar). Really yummy. Seems like the locals come here and the tourists go to café du monde. The Americans love their food and eating. The servings are very huge.

Blues and jazz on Decatur Street and around Frenchmen Street. Saw Ed Wills on Decatur Street and again at BMC. He was great, even bought his CD for $15. Went into House of Blues which is next door and some band playing Guns and Roses butchered the songs. Bourbon Street tends to do more the modern stuff which to me is not the authentic or traditional New Orleans I wanted to experience. Walk around the art area which tends to be less crowded. Not many arcades around but there’s 2 we found that were a great retreat away from the crowds – on St Peters and Exchange Place. New Orleans and their French Quarters seem to have a party every night and is always busy and crowded.

Enjoyed a recent stay at the Hotel St. Marie for a four-day conference. The best thing about the hotel is the location for sure, only a half-block from Bourbon Street on Toulouse, and one of the better blocks on Bourbon at that, with Pat O'Brien's Bar and Courtyard, Fat Tuesday's Daiquiris, etc. The location around the hotel isn't overly loud like some of the hotels directly on Bourbon, which is a plus. Or you can just book a courtyard room and avoid the street noise common in the French Quarter at all hours of the night. A good base of operations, only a few blocks from Royal Street shops and antique stores, and a few more blocks to the heart of it all, Jackson Square. If you are an architecture buff, you will enjoy walking Dauphine Street directly behind the hotel. Very nice. The room I booked was a courtyard balcony, and it was unexpectedly large with king bed, two end tables, desk/chair, dresser/tv, round table with two side chairs, and large bathroom. The only negative thing about the room was the small'ish window/french door to the balcony with heavy curtains, which made the room very dark. It did come with five lamps, though, so you could light it up, albeit with unnatural light. The free wifi was a plus compared to large chain hotels. The courtyard area is nice, maybe a little small, with a small pool that wouldn't hold too many people. But lots of tables, and lots of smokers taking advantage of their balconies. Better than in the rooms I guess. The restaurant and bar in this hotel are a real find--Vacherie. We absolutely loved our breakfast every day. For $10 we got two eggs, potatoes, ham, and one of the best biscuits baked in the south, and I've had a few to compare. We also had a very good dinner here one evening, with a great appetizer--yam chips. The hotel bar has happy hour specials and comfortable booth seating. A quiet respite from Bourbon Street with a convenient restroom. I was quite pleased with the hotel staff who helped us call a bunch of taxis which showed up within a few minutes. The check-in folks were very courteous throughout the entire stay, as were the breakfast wait staff. We only ran into one surly waitress at dinner, but everyone else was as nice as can be. Others have commented that this hotel is aging, and yes it shows some chips of paint and older carpet and even some moldy smells common in the tropical south. But I observed three different maintenance workers while I was at the hotel, not counting maids, and they were wiping down chair rails, polishing the brass in the elevator, and cleaning the front windows, and that's just what I saw. I never saw any signs of insect activity in the hotel, so I think the manager runs a pretty tight ship. The maids could be a little more generous with shampoo, never replacing the bottle once in five days, but otherwise the room was clean. I would easily stay at this location again, particularly if I could score the $89 per night rate we enjoyed in March 2013. Quite a bargain, I think. Skip the unfriendly Sheraton and Marriott on distant Canal Street and enjoy the real French Quarter--stay at the Hotel St. Marie. You won't regret it.
