“Great smaller hotel - Great location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2011

We just got back from a 6 night stay at the Hotel St. Marie. The service and staff were great - and we had a great room. After reading other reviews on this site, we requested a corner courtyard balcony room (king) - and got room 323. It was a very large room and the vanity area was outside the bathroom (which came in handy). The balcony was a bit small, but the view down to the courtyard and pool was nice. When I requested the particular room type the week prior to our trip, I said we were coming down for our anniversary and that we would like a large king courtyard balcony room. Not only did we get the room type we asked for - but right after getting into our room, a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket with two glasses was delivered - compliments of the hotel! That was a VERY thoughtful!

Others have complained about the rooms being musty or dirty. Our room was very clean and we didn't have any issue with that. Our A/C worked fine, too (though our friend that had another room down the hall - 306 - said her A/C thermostat seemed to be broken). The pool area was very nice - but a bit crowded at times. The courtyard is pretty small, and there isn't a lot of space around the pool itself. However - the courtyard is very pretty.

The only negatives to speak of include what others have mentioned - the single elevator and noise in the hall. We were there the week prior to and including Memorial Day weekend, and we did often have to wait a couple minutes for the elevator (earlier in the week this wasn't an issue). We didn't have any issues with noise from the room next door - but we did get a lot of noise from the hallway. There was a sizeable (nearly an inch) gap at the bottom of our door - so any doors shutting (and many inconsiderate guests would slam them) and people talking came through loud and clear. We did stuff a rolled towel under the door which helped just a bit.

We would definitely stay at the Hotel St. Marie again - primarily due to the location and the friendly/helpful staff!

This is a beautiful small hotel with a lovely peaceful courtyard with a pool. Some of the staff we encountered were extremely friendly like the valet. The gentleman who checked us in was somewhat snooty, but another woman we encountered at the desk was very friendly. Definitely splurge on a balcony. Our room was tiny, barely enough room for suitcases, the window did not open, and the bathroom was tiny with a very thin door. I wish we had a balcony those rooms seemed much better. But the price was very reasonable and it was literally right around the corner from Bourbon. There is also a little grocery nearby where you could get beer and wine before walking onto Bourbon. Parking was expensive $28 but I'm guessing thats pretty standard.

The only bad thing I can say is that the beds were pretty uncomfortable.

The room was great and right near Bourbon Street where all the actions is. The only problem is there is only one elevator and it takes a long time to get to your room. Everything was good, the people were nice, and we had agreat time as usual. This is my second stay at the Hotel St. Marie and I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Rooms are ok, but who sleeps when your in NOLA?

I stayed with my husband and another couple in this hotel. Four of our other friends had a separate room in the same hotel, with a balcony. If you do not have a balcony room, I would not plan on putting more than 2 people in a room. They are tiny, with only a foot or so between the beds and walls, and the door to the bathroom is paper thin, no lock. Our trip started with the toilet clogging and overflowing within the first 2 hours of our stay. We repeatedly had to call front desk for help. We asked if they would come mop/disinfect the floor. It spilled out so far that the carpet near the bed was wet during our entire stay. We left the room and came back 6 hours later, to see that they had not yet fixed the overflowing toilet or mopped the bathroom floor. We had to call and ask again - and from this point on, this was the only time anything in our room got cleaned. It was as if they wrote off our room cleaning for the entire weekend. We had to go out and replace our own towels from the maid stations, and our beds were never changed or made. To our knowledge, no maid was ever in our room cleaning, over our Wednesday-Sunday stay, despite us repeatedly calling and asking for service. The beds are extremely old and uncomfortable, and everything just felt unsanitary. Windows don't open in non-balcony rooms.

The "breakfast" is not a breakfast at all... stale crossants which are the worst quality I've ever seen, and unappealing apples and oranges. One day we were actually scolded for coming down at 9:59am and trying to grab a crossant quickly before the woman whisked it away. She yelled "we close at 10!"

The elevator is extremely extremely slow and frustrating. 5 minutes at least, every time, from the 3rd floor.

The only good things going for this hotel is the location. Just a few short steps from Bourbon St. Unlike other reviews, we could not hear any noise from the busy street in our room. The couryard area near the pool is really nice for lunch or a glass of wine. However, the pool itself seems very unclean. The lobby is nice, and some of the front desk staff is nice - depending on who you get.

If you're looking for a cheap stay near Bourbon, and don't really care about the quality of your room - this is the hotel for you.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony facing the pool

We have stayed at different hotels on each of our five previous visits to the French Quarter. This Hotel is a favorite now. It is located just off Bourbon Street. It is an easy walk to Jackson Square and the French Market. It is also an easy walk to the St Charles street car which takes you to the Garden District... a must see.

The room was very clean as was the entire hotel. The front desk was very helpful. They have vallet parking.

The breakfast was nice but very limited....all cold and not a lot of selection. it was fine...just not over the top.

I think you would enjoy your stay here!

We just returned from a 2 night stay at the Hotel St. Marie and were very pleased. The location is perfect. Just steps away from Bourbon St. and all the action but far enough away to be quiet. We had a courtyard facing balcony on the 3rd floor (room 302). The room was spacious (nice since there were 3 of us) and we loved having dressing area separate from the bathroom. The hotel is old but I think that just adds to it's charm. the public areas and our room were very clean. I checked the website ahead of time to see if there was free internet and it said there was free internet access(wired, I assumed) in the rooms and free wireless in the public areas. When we arrived we found out that there was free wireless in the rooms too. The only down side was the lack of furniture on the balcony. A few rooms had furniture out there but not all. At first I thought we could just pull the 2 chairs from the room out there whenever we wanted to sit out there but that didn't work because the french door leading to the balcony only opened on one side and it was a very narrow opening (about 18") so there was no way we could get the chairs through the opening. If being able to sit on your balcony is important to you ask for a room that has balcony furniture or at the very least a room that both sides of the french door will open so you can bring the room chairs out. a couple across the courtyard from us could open both of their french doors and brought their room furniture out. Ours was painted shut. this was not a big deal to us though. We didn't use the pool or go sit in the courtyard but it looked very nice. I would not hesitate to stay at the Hotel St. Marie again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony furniture.

This is a lovely old hotel in the heart of the French Quarter, a stone's throw from Bourbon Street. It is in a perfect location for exploring New Orleans, and while Bourbon Street is pretty hectic, it's far enough away to not get any of the audible sounds of debauchery, making for a good night's sleep. The decor of the hotel is lovely, and the rooms are comfortable enough. The problem is the service. Breakfast consists of croissant, apples or oranges - and that's pretty much it. You can hardly call it continental - no cereal, no yoghurt, no cheese, no meat, no bread (unless you include the croissants). One morning most of the food had run out, along with the coffee. One guest explained the situation politely to a member of staff, and was left with the impression that he was wasting her time. Our room wasn't cleaned at all one day. However, we could hear the cleaners as they were arguing so loudly that we could hear them from the other end of the corridor. It was so loud that we decided to go out early for the evening. There are better places to stay in New Orleans, which is a shame as it is just the service that lets it down. I put all this info in a feedback form which I left with reception, along with my contact details. I haven't had any response from them - I doubt if I will.
