It was clean, and I liked the interior design. It is older, but I think that is part of its charm. It had a pool that was a plus! Great location. My main complaint is that you can't sleep in if you want if housekeeping is near your door. You can hear EVERYTHING in the hallway including housekeeping's LOUD conversations. Oh, and even though check out time is posted on your door, housekeeping says it's an hour earlier and will continuously knock on your door as if that will help you hurry up.

This is a tired hotel. Our room was on the main floor of the building, which had to be accessed via the parking garage. It smelt dank and the bedding was tired.

Although the internet was supposedly free, the service was intermittant and useless for all intents and purposes.

The location, if you are keen to party with 20 somethings till you fall over, is about 20 yards from Bourbon St.

The French Quarter is vastly over rated. If you want a piece of Europe in North America, do yourself a favor and go to Quebec City.

stayed at the St. Marie recently. It does have an excellent location near the heart of Vieaux Carre. We paid about 75.00 without tax. Had I paid much more than that, I would have felt cheated. Nothing terrible mind you, but after waiting an hour for my bags to brought to my room from storage, I called to remind them. Still had to wait 30 minutes. The knob on the light switch was missing, rendering it impossible to use. Was told they would take care of it-they didn't. They did switch rooms from a view of the A/C units via only one small window, to a larger room with three windows. One suggestion, and this goes for all hotels, will you please put up another towel bar or at least a hook or two so we can have a towel at the sink and not fighting over towel rack space?!! One final comment re service. On our day of departure the valet pulled my car up, got out and walked away while I had two bags at the curb. Personally, I can go for carrying my own bags and skip the tipping, but this guy didn't even try. All he had to do was lift two small bags into the trunk and my two bucks would have been his two bucks.

The Hotel St. Marie was a diamond in the rough! We found this hotel on another website, and having never been to New Orleans before, went in completely blind. Much to our surprise, the hotel was fabulous! It has that old fashioned charm you're looking for, a balcony, spacious rooms, comfy beds, and you're only a block off Bourbon Street! I can't compliment the staff enough, either. We came from from Pat O'Brien's completely famished, and the night desk clerk ordered us a pizza from a local hot spot, and it was delivered to the lobby by bicycle in ten minutes! I can't wait to visit again...we'll definitely be staying here when we do!

Great Hotel located 1 block off of Bourbon Street.

Best part about this hotel is the location, location, location. Right off of Bourbon Street, 2 blocks from Patty O's, and there's a Lucky Dog Vendor right up the road for that Midnight to 2am nosh that you're dying for after partaking of the numerous libations up and down the Quarter.

Pro's
Rooms are spacious and well kept.
$20 per day unlimited trips
Unlimited Wired Internet

Cons
Limited dining
Pool area a bit small
overcharge for balcony experience

All in all, a 4-* star facility, with the Ability to be a truly 4+ to 5 *.

Stayed at the St Marie during the second week of September this year and it was ok, but really nothing more special than that in my opinion. It's a nice looking old building with typically french wrought iron balcony's on the front, and a nicely planted outdoor courtyard in the centre. Rooms are non-smoking in this hotel, so the courtyard is the only place you're able to do so, or, of course, you can stand on the street. Speaking of which, this hotel is located in the heart of the french quarter, literally a stones throw from Bourbon Street if you want to party- try a hurricane!!- and yet just far enough away from the main drag to allow you some peace and quiet to wind down in. All other attractions in the french quarter are easily within walking distance, and, if you don't want to be totally smashed for the entire duration of your stay, there are lots of different local tours, great cafes, and music venues to distract you from drinking.

The room we had was in a seperate wing from the main building, though right next door. The first thing that hits you when you walk into the wing is a musty damp smell, and the rooms within are no exception. However, the room was a good size, clean and tidy- although a bit on the shabby side- with two beds and incredibly high ceilings. The ceilings made it feel a bit on the cavernous side and therefore less cosy, as did the smell of damp. Air con worked a treat and I've never been more grateful for it- New Orleans is incredibly hot and sticky! The bathroom was also a good size with a very small balcony overlooking a couple of rooms' private courtyard.

We didn't really have that many dealings with staff, but those we did have were with the same receptionist for the three days we were there, and whom, unfortunately, always came across as a bit surly. By the way, the hotel won't change up travellers cheques so make sure you cash them at a bank during regular banking hours.

All in all, I absolutely loved New Orleans. Great eating, great drinking, great music, great atmosphere. With all those 'greats' I just wish I'd picked a great hotel to top it off. Location wise, the hotel really can't be faulted though. If you're going to N.O to party, it's absolutely fine. For something a little more special, it's probably best to look at a few other options.

I've stayed multiple times at the Prince Conti, HSM's "brother" hotel. I've always wanted to stay at HSM and was pleasantly surprised. Location is fantastic for my needs. Everyone I dealt with at the hotel was so friendly and helpful. Even housekeeping staff worried about me when I had an allergy attack during my stay. I would highly recommend this quaint boutique hotel. Only drawback is ice and sodas are on the main floor; but that's a minor problem which you have to deal with in staying at a "quaint" hotel instead of the larger ones. No biggie. Free local and USA Today daily. I would highly recommend staying here if you enjoy a smaller, clean, quiet hotel.
