“Excellent venue for Tales of the Cocktails”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

We've spent the past 4 days at various exhibits for "Tales of the Cocktails". We went to a few tastings and a lecture at the Royal Sonesta. The hotel staff were completely on top of things, very helpful, polite, and professional. The last two events we went to "Journey to La Primavera" and "The most innovative tequila products" were well run, had great food, and hotel staff were present without being intrusive. Well done!

This is my favorite hotel in all of New Orleans. I have been to Nola five times. Usually we stay in the business district believing (mistakenly) that we would be away from the night noise of the Quarter. My husband and I had a beautiful room on a side street and it was very peaceful. Even though we were there on Saint Patrick's Day it was resonably quiet. But I am getting ahead of myself...
From the outside Royal Sonesta looks okay, like most things in New Orleans it is worn in and charmingly wearing the signs of its age. When you step inside...WOW! Glamourous and well-appointed does not begin to describe it. Maybe it is me being used to business-class accomodations for most trips, but here I felt like a star. The employees were wonderful and attentive and we lacked for nothing. They were so helpful and very polite.
If I had to register a complaint, the only one I would have is the elevators. There are only two next to check-in and that was not enough to handle the volume of people that they had when we were there. Luckily we don't mind climbing the stairs! But the elevator, itself was lovely.
I could not believe how beautiful our room was. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The decor made you really feel like you were in New Orleans. They even had robes and slippers. The balcony was beautiful and allowed us a slightly and comfortably removed view of the revelry going on down below as we sipped our cocktails. We went down to the outside bar later that evening (my husband likes to smoke.) It was fun and lively and entertaining to say the least. In the morning we ate breakfast at the restaurant and it was reasonably priced and very good. As always the service was impeccable. You will like the pools and the interior courtyard- very well maintained. I loved the way the interior halls ran in a circle. I was able to do a morning walk in air conditioned bliss. This is a very well-run hotel.
The location is very good for touring and it is close to stores like CVS so that you can get some snacks and other necessities. The neighborhood is safe and well-traveled. If you don't mind the ocasional tourist who has had one too many you will like it a lot. I do caution you that the area is right off of Bourbon and I would not recomend that you bring children to the area unless you are willing to do a LOT of explaining. Maybe it is a good lesson on the evils of overindulgence? Maybe not.
I am wishing I was there. I will definitely be returning to the Royal Sonesta. Choose this one-it's a winner!

Room Tip: if you want entertainment, fun and smoking-pick an outside room. If you want quiet, inside courtyard...

Thank you for choosing the Royal Sonesta for your St. Patrick’s Day trip! We strive to make all of our guests feel special and it appears that we were successful in making this vacation memorable for you and your husband. We do apologize that the elevators were slow. We do have two different sets of elevators for guests, but during special events such as St. Patrick’s Day weekend, they can get fairly crowded. We look forward to seeing you the next time you are in New Orleans which he hope isn’t too long from now!

My son and I stayed here at the end of May for a mother-son trip. We were originally staying at the Monteleone, but I purchased a $149 LivingSocial voucher and immediately called to make reservations. The voucher included our room (did not include tax on the room), bottle of champagne, $10 voucher to Desire, $5 voucher for PJs and $10 voucher for the jazz bar as well as a coupon book that is good through the end of the year.

I have stayed here many times before, even hosted a 40th birthday party here in a suite, and as always, the hotel and service were incredible. The icing on the cake was the value of the LivingSocial package I purchased. My son said it is the "most luxurious hotel" he has ever stayed in! Thank you Royal Sonesta for a great trip.

The location is perfect. Bourbon Street is right out the front door and easy walking distance to the French Quarter/Jackson Square, Frenchman Street, the Cathedral, etc. The hotel is nice but the rooms/pool could use a facelift. The pool area has a nice courtyard with an outdoor bar (drinks are pricey). We stayed in a King room which was adequate but small and dated. The bathroom was also adequate but dated. The bed was comfy. The hotel staff was not the best as far as customer service goes. We let the hotel know we were celebrating both an anniversary and my husband's B-Day, but no one acknowledged either. I would stay again off season, but would not pay the price to stay during high season as there are plenty of other less expensive choices at newer properties.

Room Tip: Interior room facing pool

Arrived here on a Thursday after two long connecting flights and a Tom-Tom guided drive in from NOLA airport. Like arriving at an endless ongoing party - streets barricaded off, revelers strutting their stuff - gals in cowboy hats, boots and little else, corpulent guys gravel-voiced someway south of Nick Nolte. Hey, Nawlins man!

So something of a surprise to drop the car off in the subterranean garage of the Sonesta and rise up into the cool, air conditioned glam lobby. "Can I help you with your bags Sir?" You certainly can.

Our room overlooked the pool and patio area, filled with a different set of party animals. The rich, downing Mai Tais and Mint Juleps like there would never be another Mardi Gras.

And a very comfortable King Size bed there was. Slowish Wi-Fi, but probably because the entire hotel was online trying to find anywhere nearby with the kind of Jazz that Louis Armstrong made famous. Fat chance. Bourbon Street is filled with scummy bars playing awful 4th rate Rolling Stones rehashes by semi pro bands and even worse, karaoke. Gone are the piano bars where you might find Dr. John or Fats Domino or Harry Connick Jr, vamping on a night off. But all is not lost. Wander off towards Jackson Square and your ears will guide you to a bunch of kids playing the music this city made famous - trumpet, tuba, trombone and snare drums. Fabulous and worth every dollar you mostly certainly will give them. And outside the Cafe du Monde - essential for beignets and coffee - I heard a wiry man in his late forties singing his soul out. Wade In The Water and Amazing Grace, testament to his childhood in Baptist churches. Such courage, armed with nothing but this voice that hit every note heart-stoppingly bang on. It was like Sam Cooke was back and had never been near that damn motel.

And in the midst of all this, the Sonesta is your sanctuary.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool, class. Overlooking Bourbon Street, trash.

Thank you for your very eloquent review. We are so pleased that you found sanctuary from the commotion of the streets at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. When searching for jazz music in the French Quarter you should not have to look further than Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse in the lobby of our hotel. Their nightly jazz performances are unmatched on Bourbon Street. Should your future travels bring you back to New Orleans, we would love to have you return to stay with us again.

If you want to be in the heart of New Orleans Bourbon Street, this is a great place to stay. The hotel is lovely and very clean. The staff is friendly. The room was very comfortable. It's within walking distance to many sights and is right on Bourbon Street. I have stayed their twice and would return.
