Beauty of the hotel: Excellent
Proximity to FQ attractions: Excellent
Hotel Bar (The Carousel): Excellent
Customer Service: Average
Room size: Average
This hotel is gorgeous. It is well decorated and has an aura of old Southern Charm. There is a restaurant on site but we didn't eat there during our stay. There is also a bar in the hotel called the Carousel. The Carousel is so much fun. It looks like a carousel with seats around it and it actually rotates every 15 minutes. Try the Pimm's Cup cocktail - it is delicious. This hotel is on Royal, which is parallel to Bourbon Street. It's an easy walk to anywhere in the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street (maybe 15 minutes at a casual pace). Lots of food choices, bars, and shopping right outside the door.
That being said, the rest of the stay was average. The customer service at check-in was good and I was able to get questions answered. However, at check-out I feel like it was more confusing than it needed to be and I got a little attitude and the bill was still charged to the wrong card - but it wasn't horrible by any means. The room was so small, expecially the bathroom. I often stay in NYC hotels and am used to smaller rooms but the bathroom we had the toilet was right up against the vanity so you couldn't bend your arm except without going underneath the vanity. My husband was there for a conference and he got a special room so maybe the "special" conference rooms are the most basic ones they have? Maybe the regular rooms are better?
I'm not sure about all of the hotel amenities but wireless was $9.99 a day and my husband called an 800# for a conference call and was charged. There was a business center but they charge for computer use and printing. I feel like a lot of hotels, even in heavy tourist areas, are moving towards free wireless or at least a free business center. This hotel didn't provide either but it did provide an airline check-in kiosk that allowed you to print boarding passes for free so that's nice.
Lastly, I think the room maintenance, for lack of a better word, is in need of some upgrades. The toilets were the kind in older public restrooms with the lever and the loud flush. Ours leaked where the pipe and toilet joined. There was a night light in the bathroom that you couldn't turn off that was bright at night. The air conditioning was hard to use because it was really old. There was a thermostat on this wheel thing that had temps in increments of 5 so you could put it on 65 or 70 or somewhere in between but it was hard to get the right temp in the room. The windows looked really old. The room was really noisy - which is fine if you want the noise of the French Quarter in your room. I prefer going out an exploring and coming back to quiet and that wasn't our room. I feel like if they upgraded the windows to triple pane it'd be much quieter. Or even put in complimentary ear plugs or sound machines in the room - just a nice touch for people who could use something to drown out the noise.
I go to New Orleans every 5 - 10 years so depending on the purpose of my trip (party in French Quarter) or relaxing or a bit of both, I'd consider staying here again if I got a good price.
