“Not bad”
Reviewed October 8, 2012 via mobile

The main reason that I did not give this hotel a better review other than predominantly average was that it was under renovations during our stay so there were a few inconveniences we had to deal with (nothing major though) and the service the staff provided could only be rated as basic however it is a nicely appointed hotel in a convenient location with a historic bar and decent rooftop pool and gym.

This Hotel is right in the heart of the French Quarter, so the location could not be better. The hotel is historic, but everything has been updated with taste and quality. We visited for five nights at Mardi Gras, so we were very happy that we had a quiet room on an upper level floor. The room was very clean and nicely furnished. All of the people working at the hotel are very, very friendly and efficient and helpful. The Carousel Bar is really an interesting bar (made from and antique merry-go-round, it actually rotates very slowly) and it's a great place to have a late afternoon beverage and meet people from all over the country. This gem of a hotel is expensive but worth the money. We plan to return frequently.

I lived for 45 years in New Orleans and now love to return as a tourist. The Hotel Monteleone is my favorite place to stay in the French Quarter. It is an elegant, privately owned hotel that is conveniently located, within walking distance of all French Quarter attractions (I also routinely walk from the Hotel to the Riverwalk/Convention Center/Poydras Street/Warehouse District). The Carousel Bar in the Hotel lobby is something everyone should experience, and the recent renovations have made it an even more special place to meet and visit with friends. The rooms are older, "European"-style rooms that are nicely decorated, clean and well maintained. The staff is always polite, friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Monteleone for our third time on Sept. 27-30. The first two times, we were not overly impressed, but this time was wonderful! In retrospect, I believe that we had two things going against us on the first two trips: (a) our expectations and (b) we got discounted rooms and were therefore given run of house. Coming from New York/Boston area, our expectations were high and I think certain things fell short originally, whereas this time we knew what to expect of hotels in the city in general.

Monteleone is definitely one of the best, if not the best, hotel option in a class of their own with Omni Royal Orleans and the Roosevelt/Ritz (although the latter two are not nearly as convenient for exploring the FQ). Having stayed at a few other hotels in the city, which were adequate, the Monteleone provides the best service, furnishings, amenities, and experience overrall.

The grand lobby is ornate and well decorated, with a beautiful chandelier, grandfather clock, staircase to the left, Carousel Lounge to the right, very clean lobby restrooms, and plenty of newer, plush lounge chairs/couches to serve those looking for a spot to sit. The front door men are extremely attentive and helpful with bags/taxi service.

We arrived very early, just about 10:00am. I have been to other hotels that will not check you in, even if the room is ready, until the official check in time. Instead, the front desk attendent was very nice and we were pleased that he checked us in right away. He also offered us the free wi-fi code for being iPreferred members, and we were later given a free drink coupon to the Carousel Lounge (again for being an iPrefer member).

The room (#355) was slightly bigger than the room on our first two trips. The room faced the front of the hotel, Royal Street, and the window sill was actually large enough that on a few late nights, my hubby and I comfortably sat on the sill and watched and listened to the sights and sounds below. In other rooms we've had, the view is of roofs, so this is one of those areas where you should not expect to have your breath taken away.

As a matter of paranoia, I check the linens and the rooms before ever placing my luggage/purse down and I am happy to say that I did not spot a thing! No stains, marks, critters, etc. Clean as a whistle!! The bathroom is very nicely done, although just barely large enough for the two of us to get ready in. The toiletries are great, other hotels in the FQ do not offer some or all of the toiletries that Monteleone stocks as standard: shower cap, shampoo, conditioner, bath soap, hand soap, mouthwash, and lotion. The rooms also have a hair dryer, ironing board, and iron, non-slip bath mat, plenty of towels, robes, and extra blankets. The mini-bar comes unstocked, from what I hear, I believe you can have them stock it for you, however, we just used it to store gatorade and water.

Regarding sound, either we are great sleepers, or that part of Royal gets quiet after 11p because we were never awoken by street noise, hall noise, or elevator noise.

On a couple of occasions, we used the rooftop pool, which is heated! On prior trips (in August) the pool was packed mid-day on Fridays and Saturdays, this time around (although warm outside) the pool was less busy and we had no problem finding a lounge chair. There is drink service beginning around 11a to about 7p. You can also call down to the restaurant to order food and it will be brought up for you. Although there was a girl frequently cleaning the pool, it did seem a littler murkier than the first two trips, although it had been raining so that could have been why, and it wasn't that bad either to be honest.

The Carousel Lounge, newly redone last year, was just as nice as we remembered. It was always sufficiently busy, but not so much that you couldn't get a seat or a drink. Both bartenders made wonderful drinks, a Pimm's Cup and White Russian, and were friendly to chat with. There is a second bar toward the back of the Carousel Lounge, which we actually prefer to the Carousel itself.

I really have to make a few statements about the Carousel Lounge/Criollo restaurant area. We had come here in February 2012, our wedding was in New Orleans at Muriel's and for the after party we all went over to the Carousel Lounge. At that time, the restaurant was not entirely done, but close. To see it completely finished on this trip, all I can say is WOW, it is stunning! The design, furnishings, and details were amazing! I loved the paintings hanging nearby the Carousel, the light fixtures/chandeliers are GORGEOUS, and the design is modern and sexy, while also maintaining a feel that is consistent with the old-world elegance of the rest of the hotel.

We tried the brand new restaurant, Criollo, on our last night. It was extremely good with very good service, however, there are SOOO many delicious restaurants in New Orleans that if you are limited to how many places you can try on your first trip, I would not put this one at the top. However, if you've been to NOLA many times, and have tried alot of the "musts", then this is a very good option. We had the pork and steak and both were amazing, as was the dessert (Creme brulee).

Overall, we loved the Monteleone and really could not find a flaw this time around.

My advice for first timers staying here, just consider your expectations. This is truly a city unlike no other, so it will be different. Don't expect breathtaking city views, large rooms, and brand spanking new everything -- it is an older city and that is part of the charm.

It is a beautiful old hotel in one of my favorite sections of the French quarter. The rooms are elegant and comfortable-even the smallest ones. The bathrooms are very nice and very clean. There is a wonderful restaurant and the carousel bar is famous and usually has a lively atmosphere. The staff is friendly and helpful. When you step out onto the street you are in the middle of the best area for antiques shopping, galleries, the finest eateries and boutiques. It is our favorite hotel in New Orleans.

Really a beautiful hotel. Opted for one of the smaller, internal rooms. A little crazy not having any windows (I'm not sure I've ever stayed somewhere without windows!) but they do a wonderful job with the interior decorating, so it was wonderfully cozy and comfortable. Would certainly stay there again.
