“Nice Size Rooms, Great Location, Good for Families, Could use some Updating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We like hotels that are unique, in good locations, and well priced. The Lafayette met all of those critera. We started out trying to book at one of its sister hotels in the French Quarter, but it was sold out. The reservation page showed all the hotels in this group, and the Lafeyette was one of the choices. The location turned out to be perfect for us, we were able to walk to the French Quarter as well as the WWII Museum. My youngest loved that the street car stop was right in front of the hotel.
The staff was extremely nice. We especially appreciated the man who worked a the front desk in the evenings. Our room was a very nice size and had a little bar/fridge area which was great since we had our children with us.
The bathroom was fine in size but could use a bit of updating.
The age of the whole place made it seem a bit dingy, but it also gave it lots of character. We liked staying somewhere that made you feel like you were in New Orleans, and not some chain motel that looks the same the world over.
Our room had a small balcony overlooking the park, which was really nice.
My husband was a little bit leery about taking children to New Orleans, but we had an amazing time. We spent 4 days in the city and could have easily filled another 4-5. I wouldn't hesitate to stay in this hotel again or any of its sister hotels

We used to live in New Orleans and knew this hotel was in an ideal location. The sound of the streetcar was better than any alarm clock, a happy way to start the day! Our room and adjoining bathroom were very large with ample closet space. Loved the big windows, sitting room, desk, and comfy king-sized bed. Everything was replenished and our room was always clean. Parking at a New Orleans hotel will cost at least $20 per night so just figure it into your budget. If you are staying in the areas serviced by the streetcar, you won't even need a vehicle.

Loved the location, We could walk to the French Quarter and the street trolley was right outside. However, we did hear the trolley at night when sleeping, but got use to it quickly. It was worth hearing the trolley because we had a super corner room~ suite that overlooked the park. Sweet ! as there was a free concert going on. Large windows led out to a narrow balcony. Had a bedroom , bath then a sitting room. Tvs in both the sitting room and bedroom. Some of the sitting room furniture could use updating. We loved the high bed which was super comfortable. Parking was too expensive considering what we paid for the room....... No coffee.
Front desk clerk first time we spoke to us kept us waiting for no reason we could figure out. After that she was nice.
go back? would depend on the price.

The Lafayette Hotel was named one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. We have been to New Orleans twice before and try to stay at a new place each time. We have previously stayed at the Maison Dupuy and the Monteleone. We're fairly well traveled but we work for a living, so we expect people to put forth the same effort we do in our day-to-day.

With the aforementioned award, we were excited to try it. The curb appeal was good. Nicely situated just outside the Quarter on St. Charles Avenue, it has tasteful curb appeal. There's room to pull up curbside and unload bags. Parking is valet in an adjacent lot, but the price was high at $28 relative to the fact it wasn't in the Quarter. The turnaround time on obtaining your vehicle is good, and they are flexible to a degree in leaving your vehicle at the curb for a few minutes if you're only going to be back for 10-15 minutes. Its proximity to The St. Charles streetcar is an obvious draw, but it was down for maintenance/repairs our entire trip. While there is no requirement that they provide notification, one might think that they would realize the pertinence to guests booking reservations and mention it as a courtesy as they may be factoring that into their travels/accomodations. They did not do so.

The lower level/bar/lobby/restaurant are attractive. The staff was young and not as professional or polished as one might expect at a hotel of renown, even if it is a boutique hotel. One shouldn't have to wait on line to be attended to while the staff finishes a purely social conversation. For what is paid for a room per night at any given hotel, the guests should remain the priority.

We didn't try the restaurant, only because it's NOLA and the food is too incredible to eat in the hotel. Room service was overpriced, as is the norm in hotels. There was essentially no outdoor noise, even being close to traffic. It's near a small park (i.e. Lafayette Park).

The cleaning staff was good. Rooms were clean and they made return attempts when we had the 'Do Not Disturb' tag out. Plates were left in the halls for some length of time when room service was finished at other rooms. The furnishings were average. The view was of a parking lot. Someone has to have that view, so no biggie. It did have a safe. The mattress was fairly comfortable.

Okay, major pet peeve that gets a hotel no better than an average rating is crappy shower pressure. This would be an insult to the term crappy, as it practically dribbled out of the head. It was August in NOLA--one does perspire and with us running in the morning on several occasions, it would've been nice to feel as though the grime were washed away. My wife's family farm has better pressure, and they depend on water from a well. One of the most basic but noticeable elements to any stay. Simple to make a positive impression and a big FAIL. The compounding problem is that this is an easy quality item to monitor. Twice a month, turn the shower on while cleaning the room. If the pressure is poor, report it.

I understand the hotel is undergoing renovation - starting with the exterior (completed) and continuing with interior carpeting and paint over the next year or two. It is located just on the edge of the Warehouse / Arts District and a few short blocks from the Quarter - far enough that you can barely hear the melee and well beyond the late night stank of Bourbon. Bourbon St. is a great place to party, but not a fun place to wake up the next morning, which is why this location was ideal for my wife and I.

The hotel is a classic - it reminds me of my family's home in Virginia with it's timeless, period decor and appointments, tall ceilings and elegant styling, but the best thing about the hotel is the staff.

From the moment we were greeted onward, they were there to offer advice, assist with logistics, hail cabs, and provide any reasonable hotel service requested. One day we declined housekeeping service (it had been a late night and we had the Do Not Disturb sign up), they left a bag of fresh towells and toiletries hanging from the doorknob.

Special thanks to Dwayne, whose last name I did not catch. He was extremely helpful with dining and cocktail suggestions.

Particularly for the EXTREMELY reasonable price, you cannot beat this hotel. It is not a shiny new Vegas Casino, and I withheld a star only because 5-star hotels, in my experience, are over the top with amenities, and the mattress could have been a little bit newer. If, however, you are like me and prefer some history, culture, and don't mind a little of the wear and tear that comes with age (they're working on it, and make no mistake - it is a CLEAN place, just not a NEW place), you will love this hotel.

We will be back and highly recommend it.

This is conveniently located near the old City Hall, Lafayette Square, and the Federal Courts. The employees are very courteous and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and the prices are good.

I recommend this for tourist or business travelers.

Room Tip: Get a suite.

To be honest this wasn't our first pick. Our reservation was for the French Market Inn. However, we called in our reservation and the hotel clerk at the FMI entered our dates incorrectly. Being that they are sister hotels, they upgraded our room and sent us over to Layette Hotel. I must say Dwayne was amazing. From the moment he greeted us, we knew we were on good hands. No matter how many questions we asked, he kindly had an answer for us. Our room was very quiet and clean. So glad that was booked and that they had a mishap.
