“Away from the Huzzah, but not too far”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

I understand the hotel is undergoing renovation - starting with the exterior (completed) and continuing with interior carpeting and paint over the next year or two. It is located just on the edge of the Warehouse / Arts District and a few short blocks from the Quarter - far enough that you can barely hear the melee and well beyond the late night stank of Bourbon. Bourbon St. is a great place to party, but not a fun place to wake up the next morning, which is why this location was ideal for my wife and I.

The hotel is a classic - it reminds me of my family's home in Virginia with it's timeless, period decor and appointments, tall ceilings and elegant styling, but the best thing about the hotel is the staff.

From the moment we were greeted onward, they were there to offer advice, assist with logistics, hail cabs, and provide any reasonable hotel service requested. One day we declined housekeeping service (it had been a late night and we had the Do Not Disturb sign up), they left a bag of fresh towells and toiletries hanging from the doorknob.

Special thanks to Dwayne, whose last name I did not catch. He was extremely helpful with dining and cocktail suggestions.

Particularly for the EXTREMELY reasonable price, you cannot beat this hotel. It is not a shiny new Vegas Casino, and I withheld a star only because 5-star hotels, in my experience, are over the top with amenities, and the mattress could have been a little bit newer. If, however, you are like me and prefer some history, culture, and don't mind a little of the wear and tear that comes with age (they're working on it, and make no mistake - it is a CLEAN place, just not a NEW place), you will love this hotel.

We will be back and highly recommend it.

This is conveniently located near the old City Hall, Lafayette Square, and the Federal Courts. The employees are very courteous and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and the prices are good.

I recommend this for tourist or business travelers.

Room Tip: Get a suite.

To be honest this wasn't our first pick. Our reservation was for the French Market Inn. However, we called in our reservation and the hotel clerk at the FMI entered our dates incorrectly. Being that they are sister hotels, they upgraded our room and sent us over to Layette Hotel. I must say Dwayne was amazing. From the moment he greeted us, we knew we were on good hands. No matter how many questions we asked, he kindly had an answer for us. Our room was very quiet and clean. So glad that was booked and that they had a mishap.

I just returned from a five-day trip to New Orleans, and stayed at the Lafayette Hotel with my younger cousin. The hotel is perfect-the large bed was very clean (we only ever saw the cleaner once because they move so fast), the bathroom was clean and spacious, and we had a view of the front of the hotel. As others have mentioned, having a room near the front will certainly mean that you will hear the streetcar as it is right outside, but it won't be a problem unless you are a very light sleeper. There is a new restaurant called Desi Vega's attached to it, as well as a bar, and the doorman was very attentive and helpful. Dwayne is a very witty guy and is very confident, and you will know that he knows what he is talking about.
The hotel is located so conveniently that the only time my cousin and I used our car during our five-day stay is when we went to the Audubon Zoo. We walked everywhere else, as the Quarter is only several blocks away and St Charles leads right onto Royal St. There was even a concert at Lafayette Park on Wednesday, and being so close definitely helped us enjoy the experience. All in all, a great hotel in a perfect location and I would definitely return whenever I come back to New Orleans.

I spent three days in New Orleans the week after Mardi Gras 2013 and was very satisfied with this hotel. It takes care of the basics well. The room had high ceilings, chintzy decor and was a nice size, as was the bathroom. I found the bed super comfortable and the air-con was very effective but I guess that would standard in the city. The rooms at the front are a little prone to street noise- the St Charles Tram rolls by at all hours outside- if you were a light sleeper this would be a problem but you don't go to New Orleans for peace and quiet!

If you are looking for top notch service and peripherals you may be disappointed- the TV was a bit basic as were the soaps, shampoos etc. The lobby is too small to hang around in and socialise if that's your thing and the bar and eatery, attached to but not run by the hotel, are pricey given the cost of the rooms. But the location is fantastic, as a previous poster has said pretty much ten minutes walk from anywhere you would want to be in the City.

Room Tip: ask for room at the back of the building.

Rooms are clean and sizable. Nice place. There is a decent bar and restraurant attached. It's a 10 minute walk to everything. 10 min to French Qtr, 10 min to Convention Center, 10 min to Superdome. Main complaint was that the internet wi-fi was on again; off again (mostly the latter). Also, their PC wouldn't let mje print out my Jet Blue boarding pass b/c it won't allow a pdf download (and printing directly squshed up the bar code). Staff was nice and place was low key and homey. OK all around. Not bad. Not spectacular. It's really a 3+ rating. would have been 4 if not for the wi-fi.

Room Tip: The higher up the better (only has 5 floors). There is a trolly on the street. Not running at nigh...

We just had a stay here and really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are a little old but nice. The shower blasts plenty of hot water. The street cars stop just outside the hotel entrance. Don't bother to rent a car. Parking can be expensive in NOLA and hard to find. The street cars are only $3 per day per person. They'll take you where you want to go. The French Quarter is only a few blocks away. A quick walk to Bourbon St. The hotel is centrally located between the Garden District and the French Quarter. Close to everything. We will gladly stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Square.
