We chose the St. Charles Guest House because it was a good value and convenient to friends in the Garden District. We were satisfied with our room, which was large and pleasant. Our bed was a bit soft for me, but comfortable--and we appreciated the extra blanket and comforter in the armoire for cool nights. There were lights on either side of the bed for reading, which I always appreciate. The breakfast room was pleasant and self-serve (as in if the coffee runs out, you find the supplies in the cupboard and make it--fine with me!) There was coffee, tea, hot chocolate, OJ, bread for toast, peanut butter and chocolate spreads, as well as prepackaged pastries and a basket of fresh fruit. The St. Charles is within easy walking distance of both Magazine Street and St. Charles Ave, that offer many dining and shopping options. We had a car and always found street parking--if not right in front--very close-by. The guest house's owner, Dennis Hilton is very gracious and helpful--and went above and beyond in walking to a nearby pharmacy through a Mardi Gras parade to pick up a prescription for my husband when he was ill and also brought bottled water up to the room for him, which meant so much to us. There was a nice group of guests there that we enjoyed talking to in the breakfast room--and even though it was Mardi Gras--it was very quiet--you...We chose the St. Charles Guest House because it was a good value and convenient to friends in the Garden District. There was a nice group of guests there that we enjoyed talking to in the breakfast room--and even though it was Mardi Gras--it was very quiet--you could almost hear a pin drop at night. The St. Charles has a loyal following of return visitors--like a couple we met who has been coming there for 12 years. That said, the St. Charles Guest House is not for everyone. I understand that the rooms vary greatly. As owner Dennis Hilton will say, "We're not fancy." If you're looking for a high end, well appointed, squeaky clean B&B with a home cooked breakfast, this is not the place for you. While we found it to be clean and comfortable, it is worn with areas in need of repair. But for this location and the amenities, we found it to be a good value and with its own charms.More
