If you want to have an authentic New Orleans experience and feel at home while you do it, I strongly encourage you to spend a few days at the House of the Rising Sun in Algiers Point. It's only blocks away from the short ferry ride to the Downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter.
My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at the House of the Rising Sun for a number of weekends over the past few months. We were living in Baton Rouge at the time and purchased a home in the Algiers Point neighborhood. One of my cousin's had recently spent a night at the House of the Rising Sun and said we should look into staying here. Kevin and Wendy were great hosts, they knew the ins and outs of New Orleans and offered us great recommendations on where to eat and find live music. Kevin also shared some of Algiers Point's history with us, as he is also President of the Algiers Historical Society. We had the most fun staying in the Algiers Point neighborhood and having a few pints at the local English Pub (The Crown and Anchor) and dining at Vine n Dine (local wine bar and bistro).
That first weekend was so much fun (yes, we did work on and check out our home renovations too) every time we returned to New Orleans to check on our house we booked the weekend at the House of the Rising Sun!
