Our group was looking for a place to help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans as we were aware that there is still a lot of damage there from Hurricane Katrina. There are a number of groups that do this work - but stay away from this one. The Director is unorganized - didn't have enough work for us - we completed in two days more than they usually do in a week and she ran out of things for us to do. Consequently we didn't end up staying the last day to work. Things are not planned out well - our people repainted the interior of a house 4 times because they kept running out of color and then had to start over. They didn't do prep work - asking us to paint the exterior of a house but didn't bother to remove the wasp nests that were on the eaves. Granted they could use a lot more money for equipment and all, but was left with the distinct impression that the money given might never make it to what it is intended for. Suggest that you stay away from lowernine.org Find another group to work with if you wish to offer services. They just didn't know what to do with 36 people. Also - no bathroom facilities where you work.

The 9th ward is the worse of the city. Avoid the tours at any cost.

It was bad before Katrina, now it is worse

This was part of a tour. I would not walk it or travel this area on my own. There were still a few houses affected by Katrina but the Ward is mostly rebuilt.

The lower 9th was flooded not only by Katrina but also by Hurricane Betsy in the 1960's. There are some places in which people just should not live, especially a population that doesn't have the resources (personal wealth, insurance, etc) to rebuild. This is one of them. The fact that only a fraction of the residents have returned tells you something. The best use for this area would be community parks, ball fields, etc. that could suffer flooding and then return.

This area is worth driving through if only for the educational benefit of seeing the devastation, and how good money has been wasted through sporatic spurts of rebuilding. Mr. Pitt's money would have been better spent in the Upper 9th or Gentilly areas.

Drove through the area by ourselves - a very sad but historical experience. It a sight to see all that happened & all that was is being done to repair it all. Much beauty is being restored but it still has a long way to go - wish more was being one to help the people affected.
