“Fun on the Mississippi!”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We took the Algiers ferry mainly for one reason.. to say we sailed on the mighty Mississippi! We did, however really enjoy the short trip across the river to Algiers Island. Once there we visited the local tavern for a cold beverage and very nearly stayed for supper. They had a nice little restaurant in the back which had dinner specials nightly. (Prime Rib this particular night) The view from the deck is beautiful and makes for a nice little point of attractions of the waterfront of New Orleans.

“First Time for me”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

I've always stayed on the city side of New Orleans. Whether it be in the bywater or marigny I never stayed any where else until this trip. Even though the Ferry did get behind from time to time it was nice to come back to the quieter side of the city. If you stay in Algiers things close early so come prepared for whatever you need after 7 p.m.

I take a Ferry to Marblehead or Put-in-Bay all the time so the Algiers Ferry to me was no different. A little older, but it's free if you are just along for the ride and only $1 if you are driving! Can't beat a $1!

“Nice sojourn from the crowds of NOLA”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Walk to the end of Canal St. to ride this ferry for free. VERY short ride across the river brings you to Old Algiers. We walked the charming streets for a bit, talked with a fireman in front of the firehouse who told us it was not such a safe spot to be wandering about - but we enjoyed it and headed back after our talk with him. A few cafes and a wonderful church that played songs on the bells lent to the charm here.

“Canal Street / Algiers Ferry”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Canal Street cuts a wide swath through New Orleans and ends at the Mississippi River.

Lots of major name hotels along this route including Harrah's Club gambling casino. The Aquarium, IMAX Theatre and the RiverWalk Mall are right there at the end where you would board the ferry.

Algiers section is just across the river and many locals live there and 'commute' on the ferry every every day.

Free for pedestrians, this river transport has been around since the early 1800's. Great back views of New Orleans with lots of places to eat on the West Bank. Not as pricey as French Qtr.

Leaves every half hour or so (both ways). You can take cars - may be a nominal fee for vehicles.
