Walk to the end of Canal St. to ride this ferry for free. VERY short ride across the river brings you to Old Algiers. We walked the charming streets for a bit, talked with a fireman in front of the firehouse who told us it was not such a safe spot to be wandering about - but we enjoyed it and headed back after our talk with him. A few cafes and a wonderful church that played songs on the bells lent to the charm here.

Canal Street cuts a wide swath through New Orleans and ends at the Mississippi River.

Lots of major name hotels along this route including Harrah's Club gambling casino. The Aquarium, IMAX Theatre and the RiverWalk Mall are right there at the end where you would board the ferry.

Algiers section is just across the river and many locals live there and 'commute' on the ferry every every day.

Free for pedestrians, this river transport has been around since the early 1800's. Great back views of New Orleans with lots of places to eat on the West Bank. Not as pricey as French Qtr.

Leaves every half hour or so (both ways). You can take cars - may be a nominal fee for vehicles.

We couldn't believe that the ferry ride across the Mississippi was free! The panoramic views from the top deck of the ferry gives a wonderful view of downtown and the river, brilliant for photographers. We decided to get off on the other side and were so pleased we did as we discovered that Old Algiers is an absolute gem. Quiet streets with beautiful houses, a lovely stroll around with a couple of really friendly cafes to stop for a break and a chat. A worthwhile excursion for anyone and it won't take up much of your time as the ferry runs back and forth all day long

The best view of New Orleans is from Algiers Point, across the Mississippi River. Fortunately, you can take a 10 minute ride on the ferry at the foot of Canal Street, and it's free! Algiers Point is so quaint and quiet. We enjoyed going to Tout Suite for lunch.
