Country Inn & Suites By Carlson, New Orleans French Quarter

I wasn't sure what to think when I read that I'd booked the Country Inn site unseen from Hotwire. However, it was absolutely beautiful and not like any plain-jane 2-star chain hotel. A nicely converted former warehouse, the ambiance was just as nice as some other higher star hotels I've stayed at in New Orleans. The room was clean and nice (if on the smaller side). The courtyard was lovely with tropical plants and exposed brick. The staff was friendly and very attentive. The free breakfast was very good for a quick stop.

The only drawbacks--as others have said, the small pool is more of a large hot tub. There are weird mini-stairs in each hallway that have to be navigated while you are on your floor. There isn't a restaurant in the hotel, so order out (and pick it up at the front desk area) or wander outside the hotel for dinner. Despite that, it's quite lovely and I'd stay here again in a minute.

Glad to hear you had a great stay! The property is far from cookie-cutter, and has a lot of French Quarter charm. As you note, the buildings all date back to the 1860's and have a ton of character which we think really adds to the experience. There are a few quirks, like the staircases, but we have tried to accommodate those with a separate elevator allowing guests to fully skip them if desired.

Thanks for taking the time to share the feedback! Hopefully you get to return to New Orleans again soon!

Cannot wait to spend a few days for the first time in New Orleans, LA. We have three nights booked at your location. I will be traveling with a high school senior who absolutely loves sports! In fact we will be going to the Superdome for the preseason game between the Saints and the Chiefs. Hoping you can provide some guidance as to the safest way to get to and from the game as it doesn't start until 8:00 p.m. Thanks, in advance, for your guidance.

Glad to help out - Honestly, the dome is an easy walk about a mile straight up Poydras, and you will be accompanied by thousands of others headed in the same direction (also true on the way back). Between the tailgaters and crowds, it is a fun atmosphere. If you are uncomfortable walking, it is also a short cab ride.

If you have any other questions definitely feel free to contact us directly! Hope you have a great stay!

My friend and I stayed here while attending a conference at the Sheraton just a few minutes away. The room was comfortable and quiet and about half the price of the conference hotel. with a free hot and healthy breakfast which added greatly to the value. Another reviewer who complained about having to go up and down stairs to get to the room apparently wasn't paying attention when directed to the elevator. Our room was on a level half a floor below the main floor too, but a separate elevator around the corner from the main elevators stopped directly at our half floor. Every staff person we dealt with was friendly and efficient--front desk, concierge, and breakfast room. We really appreciated having a refrigerator AND a microwave in our room, and enjoyed the 24/7 hot coffee and snacks in the lobby area as well. Location couldn't have been better--easy walking distance to the French Quarter, public transportation, river walk, and great restaurants--and yet just enough off the beaten path to be quiet at night. And finally there was a great little lending library in the lobby with new books to take and read and return at our next visit to any other Country Inn & Suites. This former librarian couldn't have been happier.

We had reserved a suite, but were told it was not available when we arrived. The next day they moved us to the suite, but the air-conditioning did not work the next two nights. Good location, nice staff, but needs work.

For our recent trip to New Orleans, bringing our U.K. friends along with us, we scouted out the Country Inn and Suites, receiving an excellent room rate for such a highly rated hotel online. Reservations were a simple online task, and the hotel was reported to be a mere 3 blocks away from Bourbon Street, so we thought that a perfect distance - easy walk, far enough so as to not have to overhear the really late-night rowdy party people if we came in early ourselves.

The previous time we stayed at the Sheraton on Canal, and while it was nice, and very well located for walking about, the rooms were a bit dated feeling, but not in a historic way - in a "this is an aging motel hotel" way. I told you that to tell you this -- The Country Inn and Suites is an amalgam, an amoeba of connected buildings, all of which together make up the totality of the hotel. it's a bit confusing to find your room the first time, i.e. "Go down to the end of that hall, and turn right. Take the elevator at the end, and go up to the 3rd floor. Then you can either go halfway down on your right and take the stairs down one flight, or go the other way and take the elevator to the 2nd floor North." Like that. Still, once you are to your room, it's no problem.

The main entry to the building is indicative of the type of room you will find if you stay here. Classic, classy (not the same thing), and old but renovated with modern technique to look great. I better not draw a simile with ladies and plastic surgons, huh...

Our room wasn't the same sheer size as at the Sheraton, but it was very clean, things that are supposed to sparkle were, things that usually need dusting had been, and everything worked. There was a lot of extras in our room that we didn't even need, but they'd be nice to have if you were staying for a couple of days and planned for it, mini fridge, microwave, coffeepot in room, things like that. The bathroom was spotless, and it was were one noticed the age of the hotel, as our particular room had a somewhat smallish bathroom in comparison with some other hotels, but this one WAS spotless, so it didn't bother us in the slightest.

The staff were very friendly, and helpful to tell us which way to head to go where, as it was only our second trip to NOLA ourselves. We hadn't done anything other than Bourbon Street the last time, except to head to a restaurant for dinner someplace posh. Everyone spoke and was friendly, even the Spanish-speaking maid we met in the hallway, who we asked directions tot he hotel courtyard, and once we conquered the language barrier, was pleased to actually show us the way. Nice of her. The manager checked on us in the hallway the second day, and the front desk an concierge staff were all top notch.

The only reason for my "3" ratings for restaurant and room service is that we didn't go to any restaurant on the property, nor did we order room service. The breakfast, included in the price, was excellent however.

For the price, it is very hard to beat the Country Inn and Suites for quality and location and amenities. We decided that we'll stay there again when we return to New Orleans.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which faces Magazine St., as it is the street away from the French Quarter.

My husband & I booked a pretty-close-to-last-minute trip to New Orleans for our anniversary in June of 2013. We wanted to be close to the action, but still a little way away. This location was near ideal! The walk to & from Bourbon Street & surrounding areas was not bad at all (except the day I wore uncomfortable flip-flops!). The front desk employees were wonderful & the concierge offered great advice! Our room was very clean & tidy. The breakfast was yummy, but I would recommend getting there early! We were usually up & ready for breakfast by 9, but that place was packed when we got there. The food selections were always great & food was always fresh! We also went to happy hour at the little mini bar & it was nice. The bartender was great. The only con I can think of is that there was some construction going on in & around the hotel that started verrrrry early in the morning! The noises were pretty loud, but bearable. We did not run into any major problems during our stay. Highly recommend this hotel!
