“Slow but very good food”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We waited quite a bit for our food but it was really nice. It helps understand how African cuisine shaped Louisianan dishes.

“Not sure why I was surprised...”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

...but I was, and positively. If the only thing you want is really good vegetarian fare, this is a terrific destination. If you want to expand your food horizons and take in African dishes, by all means, put this at the top of your list. I haven't sample the entire menu yet, but everything so far is wonderful and well worth the slight difficulty visiting. Parking at some distance and walking in is the norm for many French Quarter restaurants, and Bennachin is no different. The service was very good, staff friendly, patrons courteous and ambience nice. All in all, I'd rather include Bennachin in a list of choices over some local Cajun/Creole spots that simply aren't as good.

“veg-friendly option at the edge of the French Quarter”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Just a few blocks from Frenchmen street, this African restaurant offered several Veg options.

Portions were huge, but beware the spiciness

We had:
* vegetable soup (good but very spicy)
* Thiebujin/african Jambalya (vegan version) -- requested mild -- but was still very spicy
* Steamed Tilapia -- good

Luckily we had ordered a side dish of FuFu (pounded yams/cassava) -- this was completely bland and mixing it with the too-spicy dishes above worked well

Just a note -- restroom is outside -- you have to walk through the kitchen into an inner courtyard

“Bit of Senegambia in the French Quarter”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Having travelled in West Africa, I was a bit dubious about how authentic a Senegambian restaurant could be in the heart of New Orleans. Worry not. The wonderful dishes I remember so fondly (benachin means "one pot" and is a wonderful rice dish; domoda is a classic peanut sauce and meat dish that is as filling as it is delicious; I remember the yasa as being more lemony, but it was still tasty) are beautifully replicated here. The Senegalese-Gambian couple who run the restaurant have captured the friendliness and atmosphere of West Africa in the decor as well. give it a chance -- you'll be back.

“Excellent Food & Service!”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

We went back to Bennachin multiple times during our stay in New Orleans. The food and service was just that good! It was the perfect spot for lunch after walking from one end of the French Quarter to the other, and it had options for those who like to eat vegan/vegetarian or meat.
